Is there any way to enhance the bass from the stock setup without replacement. I'm most concerned with the distortion (extreme low end) whenever lower register notes are played. Even when not at loud pressure levels, I can get distortion from the speaker box if the music has portions with enhanced bass (I presume it's recorded that way by design).

Is there any outlet (vent) at the rear of the OE box to allow for speaker deflection? If not, would an outlet help? Has anyone done this and if so, where?

I'm less interested in great sound (although surely I'd appreciate that too) than I am in reducing/eliminating the occasional (but really annoying) distortion. Regardless, I'm not about to replace the OE console, so if I've got no alternatives, then I'll have to live with it.

Thanks for any help/advice.

The sub is ported arlready. Thats what the second hole above the driver is. My go around with the factory system led me to the ditortion coming from amp itself under the passenger seat. It just ***** no way around it. Only solution is turn the bass way down or replace the amp then the sub then the head Unit etcetc.... You get the point. Sorry but thats what I learned with it.:dunno:

Damn! Truth hurts. I'm not looking for anything more than "decent" and I DON'T want to touch the factory system, but the rear console bass distortion is irritating.

Hear is one thing to try. Take the steel screen off and seal the port. If only to test it. If its the driver getting to low (unstable) that might help it stabilize better. You are up against the amp though. Good luck

I found that the distortion isn't coming from the sub, but from the two coaxial door speakers. I replaced the door speakers with some kickers, and the distortion (which sounded like sub distortion) disappeared.

I can physically feel the vibration/distortion from the center console. So there's no question it's either the mid range driver or the sub. Are you saying that if the door speakers are replaced, this will still help with the center console distortion?

I never had distortion but the problem you state stems from the fact that you tend to get more sound from the rear speaker to compensate for the fronts. With new side speakers you get a much more balanced sound and can move the fader more to the front for a better, more clean sound.

$100 will spent.

I have the polks so the next time we get together you can judge for yourself.

OK, that makes more sense. I've already moved the fader more to the front in an attempt to avoid the distortion. It helped...but obviously not near completely. I've also been told that the sub in the console can be replaced with another 6.5 inch which will end the problem. Of course you loose the deepest base response, but I doubt it would be too noticable, especially while the motor is turning.

Actually, you can replace with an aftermarket 6.5" sub (there are four available, from Kicker, JL, Lanzar, and MB Quart), and get better bass response than the OEM sub.... Several have done this. It's a drop-in solution, no modification, and not very expensive (<$100, depending where you buy it).

So the distortion is generated by the sub woofer essentially due to it's relative poor quality? Replacing it would be the easiest solution, but I don't want to do this unless this will cure the problem. Again, I'm not necessarily looking for better quality sound (of course that would be great), but my interest is simply to eliminate the serious low end distortion and vibration (over modulation) from what appears to be the console sub woofer.

Most likely. If the actual box is vibrating too (sounds like it might be based on your description?), you could add vibration damping mat (Dynamat or similar--I like Second Skin Damplifier) to quell that. But your best bet, I think, is going to be replacing the (paper cone) stock subwoofer with a higher-quality one.

Crutchfield has incorrect information. I believe Gen III/IV has 3/4" tweeters (so I've heard, but Gen II has 1" tweeters, so they may be 1" in Gen III as well), 6" woofers in the doors (three-hole mount), a 6.5" subwoofer, and 2 3/4" midrange (don't quote me on that one, though).
