Im thinking about buying a place in Florida to get away from the cold winters here in the Mid-Atlantic. I want it somewhere within 1-1 1/2 hours from Orlando. I would like a house near the water. Is there a certain neighborhood I should look into. I would like a nice neighborhood since i have 2 young kids and dont want to worry about crime. I've been looking around Winter Springs, St. cloud, and tampa. Any other recomendations?

Been thinking about this myself lately. I'm in VA. Winter Springs seems to be a nice place. My father really likes Naples (outside of your 1.5 hour range). I was thinking of driving down there this week.

By water I'm guessing you mean ocean or do you mean lake. Lots of lakes in cfl so you have lots of options if that's the case. The good thing about Orlando is your around your 1.5hr from the east or west coast if your looking for the ocean.

I'm on the East side of Tampa in the burbs...33594 ZIP. One hr to Disney and one hr to the Gulf beaches. Less to the Bay area beaches. Home prices are great right now. Cost of living is pretty cheap too. Easy to get into the country for some nice drives as well. In fact, just got back from a drive and saw this post. So far been here 8+ years and other than the greater Phoenix area, we love it. Got two young kid and there are many young families in the area.

33594 huh? I will look into that. I was also looking around winter springs. By water i mean either ocean or lake. I prefer ocean so the kids can live it up at the beach every year.
I will look into the tampa area code as mentioned.
The reason why I need it close to Orlando is because there is an auto train that goes from VA to Orlando which is really convenient.

FYI. Tampa has the best Steakhouse in the country. Look at the website for Bern's Steakhouse.

Hi,
I've lived in Florida off and on for 20 of the last 40 years. I've lived on both coasts and Orlando due to projects I was involved with. I have now moved back to Florida recently from Northern Virginia with the intent to stay permanently in Florida. If you plan on getting a place in FL now is the perfect time. There are great areas you can buy homes at 30% of their previous value. You could not buy the materials to build a house for what you can buy a completed house on a lot.
First, if you do come to FL and buy, I suggest you only consider buying on the water or on a golf course. Your future investment will be there and you are coming to Florida to wake up looking at something nice in the beautiful weather. Anyone can buy in a subdivision and have neighbors all around. Now you can buy these properties cheap. There are million $ water fronts for 300,000 and 750,000 golfcourse houses for 250,000. There are even cheaper prices for these properties in certain areas.
I chose to live on the West coast this time. Its a little slower and better for my teenage son. Give me call on my cell 571-220-8814 and I will be glad to give you more specifics and advice based on your goals and need.
We are really enjoying living here. We have 4 Vipers in our neighborhood and go to a car show every week. We just cruised the beach today = top down 76 degrees.

A lot of jokes about Polk County, but we have the best Sheriff by far:D

All jokes aside, we have more lakes than just about any other spot in the US. Prices here are dirt cheap AND did I mention, we have the best chapter of the VCA!

Not enough? How about it was 79.9 degrees here on my farm today on NEW YEARS DAY! Drove in the Viper and had to run the AC.

Really anywhere in Florida is great. If you are in Central or North Fl, we have a kick-a$$ chapter. The South chapter is great as well.

Good luck with your search,

Ron

i wont be going south since it is too far. I found a few houses with big ponds in the back and one house with a golfcourse in the backyard all were less than 150k Thats about my price range. I will be giving you a call in the near future SRT VENOM for some advice. I plan on going down late March with the kids to start our house search for about 3 days. I just hate dealing with real estate agents.
I just want a decent house away from all the crime to relax with the family when we come down from MD.

As President of our HOA...I have no issues with Vipers in the neighborhood!! Subdivision living does ****, but with a 10 and 8 year old and a great wife, lots of kids for them to pal around with and lots of local family stuff to do. Like having good neighbors and a community setting as well. Life is good!

Ellowviper. Ichecked some houses in the area code youposted. I found a couple that I like. I also like the fact that you mentione the kids can run around and play in the streets. Thanks for all the help. I will continue my search and hopefully find a house by this summer.
