Waited a month for the paint to cure on my side sills....:(

So tonight I'm pumped about putting the clear protective film on them and getting them back on the car with the new polished aluminum Zero Altitude Flight tips. Passenger side went great, looks amazing with the new tips (been a month since I've seen it back together). So I go to get the drivers side out of the upstairs bedroom it has been stored in for the last month and as I put it on the table I notice a small bubble, smaller then a 1/4 inch but it is there sure enough

I'm so pissed, now I have to get this fixed and wait another damn month

I just hope the body shop is cool with me when I take it back to them tomorrow, it has to be the prep work b/c they said they got everything out and welded all new aluminum, damn I'm pissed, oh well life goes on....

My Son does paint and body work from time to time and he showed me what weather, timing and temps can do to a paint job if not done right. If not done in a 'paint booth' by an experienced expert, the results can be something that you don't want to deal with. Go back to the shop with your bubble and they should stand behind it. If you did it yourself, you should grab that guy by the neck and throttle him!

No, very high end shop did it, I'm sure it won't be an issue, more just having to wait another month before driving it put back together, *****...

A month to cure? seriously? I've never heard of that.
I could see a week, maybe. Some of the clear-coats I use can be polished in 1.5 hrs.

Pending what clear is used, will determined what dry time is. Here at the shop we use PPG, they have clear we use that can be dry in 35 mins or up to 48hrs all at 70 degrees. One month is old skool paint stuff, unless your going to a paint shop from the 1950s, you'll be ready to rock and roll in a day or two.

It has nothing to do with drying. He is talking about applying paint protection film to the rockers. The paint has to be fully CURED... not dry... before applying film. If it isnt it is possible the film could lift the paint if it ever needs to be removed. I have been installing clear bras for a long time now and it has always been the rule of thumb. I have even heard painters say 60 days... which I think is really excessive.

Thanks for the responses guys, as Texas Venon said I've been told by numerous places that you have to wait 30 days to apply the film that is what makes this hick-up ****, not the fact that it happened, anyone can make a mistake I guess, it is just the clock basically starts over after I get it back and I was so pumped to have her complete and ready to drive that's all.

As far as baking and stuff goes, this is a high end Porsche / Audi center so they have 3 state of the art booths that mine was painted in and that same booth is heated (baked) so that is not the issue I don't think. I just hope they don't give me any **** about "ummmmm, that isn't our fault" kinda thing b/c I paid them to TOTALLY remove any bad in the rocker and aluminum weld it all up. They did a fantastic job, guess the only reason I'm worried is b/c they the girl today told me the guy that I was dealing with left the place 2 weeks ago to pursue something else and I would have to see a manager when I got there, I'll report back how they handled it as I know several people on the forum were considering having theirs done at this place since they did such nice work. I'm sure it will be fine, but there is always that feeling that you might get screwed so we will see, I am dropping it off this afternoon.

Thanks, you wouldn't advise longer would you, please tell me NO Also is the only thing you risk by doing it too soon is you will ruin the film, it would actually hurt the paint right?

It could affect the removal of the film if the paint comes with it, also I have heard from a couple people that the film gets cloudy, but not everyone has the same results, most put it on and don't worry because they are never taking it off while they own the car. Sorry there is no clear cut answer.

Thanks for the reply, that is what I researched, that the film can turn cloudy or have a ton of small air bubbles in it. My thought is if it wouldn't affect the paint I'd just put it on and then take it off in a month if it was bad and reapply. But there is NO WAY i'm going to do that if there is a chance it will pull up the paint, that would ****.

I have never seen film cloud do to the curing process. But I dont want ot pretend to know everything. There have been occasions where the client wanted to apply film to the panel even though the paint wasnt cured... adn we didnt have any issues with that. The only concern I have ever heard it the potential for paint to lift if it is applied to fresh paint. If they are baking the panels for you it will speed up the process greatly.

Am i the only one that finds this thread to be a Joke?. I would not personally jepordize another month of driving for a freakin 1/4" imperfection.
When my facia was repainted they baked it and then the next day I let it sit out in the hot sun for a day before putiing it back on the car. Within a month there were a few rock chips from highway driving. Now several. It is what it is. I enjoy driving the car more than staring at it in the garage and analyzing her with a magnifying glass.

I do enjoy admiring the Viper in the garage though. Anyone that has been to my "Studio" knows this

Ummmm, yeah I think you are I don't know why you think it is a joke paying a high end shop around 500 bucks and expecting it to be perfect, silly me I guess And BTW rock chips are much different then something wrong with the paint, not to mention the fact that they needed to know in case it gets worse. And in all actuality maybe it was closer to 1/2", doesn't really matter the fact is it should not be there period.

Anyway to those that care they opted to try sanding it out, took them about an hour and they put an awesome guy on it, it is not flawless but 80% better, so to your point Dom at that point I opted to just live with it, however even they admitted that they would re-paint if I wanted b/c it was a NOTICEABLE flaw. And BTW there were a few other places that we found as well and that took care of those as well, great bunch of guys at this shop.
