I have a 2002 RT/10, last year I replaced the door speakers with Polk 5 1/4 inch speakers 4 ohm, now the subwoofer in the console is torn and needs replaced. I did a search and found the most popular choice is the JL 6 1/2 subwoofer, but it is only 4 ohms and OEM is 6 ohms. My question is does the OEM amp overdrive the 4 ohm speaker? If you replaced just your subwoofer, and kept the OEM amp, which one did you use? Thanks

I don't think it will overdrive the speaker in terms of power. However, as the 2 rear channels of the amp are bridged in the roadster, the load the amp "sees" is reduced to 2 ohms. So, the question is more, if the amp is capable of handling such a low load. This, unfortunately, I don't know ;-(

This goes back to basic audio...If the amp can handle a MINIMUM of 2ohms, the 4ohm speaker will be fine. Just like running a power amp and speakers for a live show or home-audio.

I remember doing alot of research on this, and dont take my word as the be all end all, but I dont believe the factory amp can create the cross over required for it to be a dedicated subwoofer. I believe stock has low and high being delivered to that speaker as the stock amp is only a 4 channel amp. I know with mine I rewired my car do the center is now a true sub and the doors are all the mids and highs.

I had an issue by making it a dedicated sub that the box the speaker mounts into is not 100% sealed and allowed the sub to "pop". I need to pull off the panel and fiberglass the box so it was sealed.

I have the JL in my RT/10. Can't remember Ohms. Another option, which I had done and have been meaning to go back to is putting in another Polk speaker that handles mid ranges as well. The stock amp has a switch on it that has two positions, R and C. R = Roadster, C = Coupe. If you change the switch it alters what ranges are sent to speaker in between seats. While you loose a little bit of bass that JL gives, you gain a much richer all around sound. Polk speaker still gives out a decent amount of base.

Thanks for the replies, I found a replacement 6.5 inch subwoofer with 125 watts and 6 ohms. It had exact same mounting, I just installed it and it sounds just as good or better than stock. I purchased mine from www.mavin.com
