Stroker raises some intersting durability questions. Depending on what Tuner you talk to, stroking the V/10 is more than the block can handle. As an example, one tuner (tuning since '92) I talk to regularly will no longer do strokers, not because they do not make lots of power, but because he feels he is not giving his customer a product that will be reliable for the long term.

bzzzzzt Wrong answer Jay. The 510 offset grind on the crank is fine to do. There were some initial longevity issues BUT it was do to improper Piston/Rod selection. The 510 is reliable. Now the 542 - 550 is another question. There may be some long term issues with this set up.

Take this for what it is worth, opinions are like azzholes, and everyone has them.

I'd have to agree with Martin. I can't see any longevity problems with a 510 provided the hardware was top quality, but lower compression pistons will be needed to keep compression down to 9:1.

Can you get the 510 just by grinding offset for the most undersized rod bearing and then getting pistons with a higher pin to bring the piston top back down to the deck?

If that is the case, the only thing I see is the smaller rod journal is going to have a little more pressure per bearing area and a little less strength in the crank due to smaller rod journals.

The compression change shouldn't be but 9:1 vs 9.4:1 so probably no special dish needed.
Need new pistons anyway so it doesn't matter.

Tony,

What part of the car do you want?? I am assuming the engine - that way you can replace all your worn parts with my new ones?? Or do you want the rear end of the car - since that is the view you will always see of it on the highway?

Let me know, cause for the right price, I will let you have any "sum o that" part of the car!

If you offset grind the crank that much, you will grind through the heat treatment. If you re- heat treat the crank, you will be okay or you can just go the $$$$ route and buy a new billet crank. Of course, if you are going to spend the $$$$ for a new crank, make it a 4.25" and build a 542. The rod-stroke ratio will still be 1.44- short but consider that many BBCs use a rod-stroke ratio of 1.35.

Just my 2 cents

All poking fun aside, the car comes home today. I am pretty excited. It sounds even better than in did before at an idle. Give me a couple months for tuning and break in and we can get together and go run around and terrorize the highways of north Georgia!!!

This is the best looking viper on this page by the way. Not to feed any already over-inflated egos or anything.

"or you can just go the $$$$ route"

I'd say that the $$$ route would not be cost effective for the gain @510 cubes.
If $$$ isn't too important it doesn't mean anything but 22 cubes an a little extra leverage from the stroke increase, probably won't result in 20 extra hp over whatever else the engine has.
I guess there must be other factors that make the 542 more trouble than the 510, otherwise, why not go all the way with the new crank, rods and pistons.
