I don't have access to the service manual and wanted to know if 97 gts used dot 3 or dot 4 brake fluid. I m in process of doing the Toms 40mm brake upgrade and just wanted to be sure...

Thanks

Dot 4 is compatible with Dot 3. I just bled mine and changed to Dot 4. Turkey baster out all the fluid from the brake resevoir and bleed with the new fluid until clean. Ron.

Guys, correct me if I am wrong. My understanding is that if you don't track your car, Motul RBF 600 would not be a great idea unless you chage it out more frequently than a DOT 3 or 4 "standard" fluid. I thought that it was more hygroscopic; but, I haven't really heard specifics on how often it should be changed if not tracking.

For a street-only car, I would think that Valvoline DOT 3&4 synthetic (blue label), or Castrol LMA would be good.

But, for sure, bleed all of that old stuff out of there in the process of putting the new in, like Ron says above.

We use the Castoral LMA Dot 4 on the street cars and the RBF 600 on the track cars. On track cars that have brake overheating issues on certain tracks we use the Castoral SRF (high boiling point, highly expensive). The higher the boiling point the more the fluid wants to absorb moisture and needs to be changed more often.

Just got done test driving the car after toms rear caliper upgrade and the braking is much better now. I used dot 4 since I use the car as daily driver and did flush the old stuff out completely.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone...
