Explaining Viper things to you
This happened a while back so no need for sympathy cards or condolences, but I got the remnants out of the attic the other day and thought I would give every one a chuckle.

Right after I got my GTS last year I pulled the air box out to check the filters. The 3 thumb screws came out without tools even though they have a hex indentation for added torque if needed. And seeing as they came out by hand I reinstalled them by hand.

Stupid me.

A few days later leaving my margarita spot I nailed it out of the parking lot and KA-POW. ***? Gauges looked good, so found a spot to pull over and found the belt was FUBR. Decided I could make it home and did - 2 miles away.

At home I popped the hood again to see if I could figure this out. Noticed the air box screw that's 4 inches from the belt was gone. And it seems it went through the belt on the way to the pavement.

Jumped in the pickup and went back to the bar. Started walking the frontage road and found the screw.

Amazing story, I know.

Moral? Use a wrench and a little Loctite.

Barely even roadrash on that screw!

Is your clipnut still on the Al tab underneath that rear section of the airbox that the screw goes thru ? That can be replaced btw, most auto parts or well stocked hrdwr stores carry those clipnuts.

- In 13yrs of owning Vipers, I've never had one even come loose, much less work itself out :dunno: and I've always just used hand tight.

Hand tight here too--77,000 miles--no problem. I take it apart to clean every 9 or 10K miles. You need to apply a little more finger torque to that there screw ;) Maybe you forgot to tighten it at all when you reinstalled the airbox?

I cannot tell a lie....that pic is of my acr,the reason the tubes are tappered is because i have Accufab throttle bodies. The Accufabs are bigger than stock, the tubes are made for them. The knobs i make as well, just didn`t know if you are allowed to try and sell something on this site or not.:dunno:

I think you're getting free sales plugs on this thread.

Saw your air box screws on ebay and even had them on my watch list. Nice looking part. Make some more. Still have to get them tight though...
