anyone\'s oil pan gasket LEAKING??? on 96/97 b/w??

anyone's oil pan gasket is leaking?? like towards tranny...and on the starter side?? checked the rear main seal, it's GOOD, and also checked rear intake...it's good...so i'm sure it's the oil pan....just a little, not too bad, anyone had that problem???

Mine has some slight seapage. I talked to my Viper Tech the other day about it and he said it was quite common.

Try This from Final GTS:

I had this same issue on my car after installing a Pan-Baffle system. Cure was:

1. Remove pan and gasket

2. Clean all bolts, and bolt holes in pan/block with Q-Tips and alcohol/Laquer thinner-(quick dry)/Acetone/Etc.

3. Wipe both pan and block surfaces with an above cleaner, making sure any sealers-such as whats used on the 4 corners-is gone.

4. Wash oil pan gasket with Dish-Soap and WARM water to cut all oil from it. allow to air dry...may help along with cotton towel-(but wipe fibers off when done)

5. Check entire gasket for flat spots, missing peices, etc. and replace if necessary.

6. purchase some Red, high temp RTV silicon sealer, and 4 6" or longer 1/4-20 bolts.

7. place a small drop of RTV on each corner of engine block, where front and rear covers contact block...then spread this drop out thinly in a 1"x1" square.

8. thread the 4 6"+ bolts into pan corners, and allow pan and gasket to hang suspended on the heads of the bolts.

9. AGAIN, make sure Block surface is 100% free of oil drops!

10. Raise pan on 4 Bolt "Guides", and install pan bolts. Tourque bolts from center out, 95 Inch Pounds.

(the guides serve to help keep the RTV on the corners from smearing durring the typical "slide-around" install)

If leaking persists after this, you have either a porous block, porous/warped pan, or a bad gasket.

Though the above still does apply, I suspect VenomBlue550's problem is the infamous 96-97 porous pan and/or crappy seal. If it is the seal, replace with the later version metal/rubber bi-component seal. If it is the pan, upgrade the pan & seal to the later versions...you would have to be nuts to BUY a 96-97 pan as a replacement...worth the extra $$ to upgrade, for safety's sake. Also should throw in a set of baffles while you are at it...you'll kick yourself later if you dont. If you need any of the above, let me know. (if you let me know early enough, I may even be able to get them here on saturday/monday)

Also, try just going through and checking/tightening the pan bolts.

Thats generally a given, but just in case, 95 inch pounds.

Some Viper Techs are having success with a small amount of Teflon plumber's tape on EACH of the pan screws.

Oil leaks are quite deceptive. The back of the block cam plug was the source of my "oil pan" leak.... two replaced rear main seals and one oil pan gasket later.

I you have oil at the starter that means the flywheel is tossing it. Most likely it is the rear main seal retainer gasket that is leaking. I have resealed alot of them. Use silicone to reseal it. The gasket is thin and will leak again.

Put the tracing fluid in the oil and use the black light you will see the leak pattern. A good auto parts store or Eastwoods's
