BANG in the rear end

Before I start, I had 2 amazing kills this weekend. I took down an 03 cobra with 500rwhp and a RX7 putting down about 440rwhp. Both were clean wins by more than 2 car lengths from 40mph till about 1/2way through 4th. My car and I helped some people realize why the Viper has a killer rep. Anyway, that's off topic. My question is this; in one of my runs I downshifted on a roll, the shift caused the revs to go up to mid/high 4000's. I have done this before with no problem,( not very often at all because I don't normally drive the car that hard), but this time I heard a fairly loud bang from the rear end. The car drives normally, and this is good because I thought I may have damaged that halfshaft thing I have heard folks talk about. Any ideas what this sound was, just the car letting me know I'm driving a little too hard?

You hit the rev limiter.

The rev limiter just cuts out the engine doesn't it? Even though it made a thud, it still kicked in and I took it up to almost 6000 before I shifted.

I've had this happen before too when jumping on it going from 3rd gear to 2nd....sounds a little scary, but everything seems fine afterwards.

Is it just the rear end binding up to grab traction?

It's definitely not the rev limiter.

If you don't match the revs well with your speed you can get wheel hop. More from engine braking for a second than from spinning from power. A lot of people think that they are getting rubber between gears when they hear the chirp. A lot of times it is just the wheels spinning SLOWER than the car. Just a guess.

It happened to me twice way back in 97 or 98. Sounded exactly like you described it "BANG in the rear end". Both times it was while moving from a light. Each time it happened, I got out and checked under for any signs of damage but found nothing. All I could guess was that it was due to some gear not meshing in properly or the u-joints locking up and releasing suddenly. It has never happened since.

BANG in the rear end

Oh......I must have a dirty mind  sorry

Oh $hit here come the Richard Simmons pictures . . .

On a serious note, it would be really nice to know about this... doesn't seem to hurt anything, but scares the heck out of ya when it happens.

Does it sound like someone hit the frame with a sledge hammer whe it makes the noise? If so you will need to check the diff mounting bolts. There are 4 that hold the rear diff in the car. They al torque to 100 ft/lbs.I has seen quite a few cars that do this sometime on a hard upshift or on a down shift at a hi rate of speed.Hope this helps.

Tom that is exactly what it sounds like. Thanks for the tip, I will definitely check this out. I assume you're saying that we should be looking for a loose diff mounting bolt?

Thanks,
Cal
