I'm planning on doing the Silver State Classic and One Mile Shoot Out after VOI 8 in September. My '96 GTS has the stock 3.07 rear gears. It has been suggested that I swap them for 3.55's for this event. Any input from you guys would be appreciated.
Thanks

With your hp, you will probably run in the 170 range? With 18" standard Pilots and running through the traps in 5th, you would want 3.55 gears. With this combo, you would be at 5750 rpm at 170mph and could hit 177 mph at 6000 rpm.

SVS or others may have "experienced" info for you.

According to Paolo C. the 200MPH King. "With your stock motor setup you won't need to change the gears nor will you reach 180 MPH unless headed downhill for quite a while."

First of all, the wing, splitter, etc. are staying on. I realize they will produce drag but for me it's not worth the effort to remove them. Secondly, I believe the elevation where the event takes place is about 6,000 feet (could be wrong there - will have to check) and the temperature should be about 70 according to someone who was there last year. So far there's a wide opinion on the best rear gears to go with. I'm inclined to leave the stock 3.07s in , but I've never done an event like this before so I hope someone out there can give a definitive answer.

Bob,
I was there in the one mile shoot out last May 2004. I was the navigator for another driver in a modified (650 package) Viper with 3.55 gear. We did one run at 167mph and two runs at 168mph. Without me, the driver made it at 169.6mph. Another stock Viper did it about 160mph. The Viper with twin suppercharge (750+RWHP without rear wind) did it about 183mph. It was very windy and the temp is about 70+. One highly modified Vet made it about 172mph. The altiude was about 6400ft+. Cars did not run too well at this high. Anyway, you need to shift to 5th gear with either gear 3.07 or 3.55. You would lose some mph with the rear wind. You should make about 160mph or more in a mile. Good luck.
