Billet Pulley - Idler swap out....

Well after a whole lot of hard work, money and time, my engine was really beginning to look sharp. I figure that if I keep at it, it will be so damn nice I will never have to drive the rig again…just grab a lawn chair, pop the hood and stare at it in the garage. That would allow me to achieve a Grade 9 Poser class standing and, well I’d be all set for spring. But, no such luck….It was that crappy stock black painted idler pulley…just sitting there….looking at me. It would have to go….

So close…..

When I had heard that Big Dave ( http://www.davesbigbrakes.com/New_Products.php ) was going to make parole, I thought I would do everything I could to help him out. How? By asking him if I could buy just one (1) of his billet pulleys out of his whole magnificent set of them. Nice guy? You bet, hey what are friends for? When I called, Dave said something about it being better “inside” but said he would sell me a single idler pulley if I promised to spend more time at Viper Alley.

Another really nice product…the choice….black paint or custom machined, beautifully finished billet…

What to do….first…look at how the belt runs on your rig…

Grab a 15mm socket and a ratchet with a long handle….get at the lower passenger side pulley as that one will is spring loaded and is the tensioner for the whole belt..go clockwise and you will feel the whole pulley move and the belt loosen up.

Just pull up slowly….

Its best to sneak the belt off of one of the non-grooved pulley. Just loosen things up, don’t loose control of the belt.

Now take off the stock idler pulley. It’s a 14mm socket. Keep control of all the parts (watch the rear washer). The new Pulley will only go on one way or it will scrap the alternator. You will want to put on the new billet unit on with the tiniest amount of loctite Blue (medium) and crank it down to 28 FT/LBS. Those are steel threads going into aluminum…28 FT/LBS….period.

Folks, now it gets serious....take the time to be sure you get that belt on P-E-R-F-E-C-T-L-Y, other wise you will be asking Davequadruple6 a whole bunch of questions....Get a flash light and check it twice...the whole run....

Grade 9.....me and YETI......Where is that lawn chair?

Explaining Viper things to you
Actually Baz, I don't think my belt problem has really anything to do with pulleys, nor this how-to by D'Yank.

When the subject line was concluding with "Get your belt on good or be prepared to talk to DaveSuperQuad6...," I took advantage of that to post what is now my stock "airbox screw through the belt" photo.

On a side note, I actually limped the car home on that belt. Minus one airbox screw that I went back later and found.
