Braking Stability

Hey All

I am relatively new to the viper scene. I have a 2000 ACR. I have recently upgraded the stock rotors and pads to Erispeed rotors in stock sizes with EBC red pads.

I have notice a number of the things about the braking characteristics that I would like to improve on.

1. I have noticed that the new rotors and pads perform poorly when cold and they seem to cool off quickly.

2. I also have noticed that I require more force on the pedal compared to the stock set up.

3. The most disturbing part of the break setup currently, is the lack of stability under braking from speeds over 90mph. The car seems to chase ruts and leave you with a very unsettled feeling.

I have read that there is a brace for the rear suspension on Gen 2 cars that helps stabilize the car under braking. Who has tried this and what are the results.

Now before everyone jumps in and tells me to buy this system or that system. Please keep in mind that I am most interested in predictability and stability. In other words I don't want a system that is so strong that the brakes lock easily and I am looking to build a system that is very stable under braking.

Thanks

I think some (much) of the dancing around when slowing from high speeds is the lack of rear braking. The back of the car is trying to overtake the front since the small calipers don't provide enough yaw control. Search these forums for 40mm rear calipers, or sneak a peek here:

Regarding the brace - are you thinking of the rear tie rod brace on the upright?

Hey I second this question. I have Dave's brake kit, but instead of doing the srt-10 all around moved the fronts to the back and srt-10 in the front. I braked at 130 plus miles and almost lost the sucker. Rear end felt like it lifted and then did chug achug. Any more insight into this stability brace.

Hey Guy's

Here's pictures of the anti-toe brackets installed, the rear toe changes up to 1/2" under braking, making your Viper unstable, these were tested when the Archer brothers were winning everything.
They're listed under the suspension tab.

Explaining Viper things to you
All of this is not giving me warm fuzzy feelings about my stock brake '01 GTS. And the fact those brakes are coming off the car soon. I mean, I've done some high speed breaking and the thing handles beautifully with the stock brakes. But I've got on order SRT calipers, Euroteck 14" rotors and enough Big Brakes goodies to cover both the front and rear installation, but am I fixin' to be in for a big surprise next time I try to do 130 to 65 in a hurry?

Dave, I have an 01 and did Dave's last fall with SRT calipers on all 4 corners with stock SRT rotors. My car stops on a dime and high speed (OH NO:omg: there is a cop!!) braking is awesome. I don't have the toe brackets.

OK, I'm not enough a track rat to see this. Under braking, the rear end gets lighter, so why should there be enough force to affect the rear toe? I can see deflection under side loads during cornering...

Anyone explain this some more? Or any links to read about?

I don't have the rear toe correction mod but have never had a problem (other than slight constriction of the sphincter) slowing from 160 to 40 in a very short time. My set up is Brembo front calipers, Hawk Blue pads, stock rears, stock pads.

There may be something ill-adjusted in this car that walks under hard braking. Vipers don't brake exceptionally well, but generally don't feel as goofy as had been described here....

Not to be a wise-asp but it sounds like you're describing the stock GenII brake system. :dunno:

Although the rear toe bracket DOES help, you need to first take your car in and have a Viper specialist perform an alignment. That is most likely your issue. Enjoy the car.

BTW: The EBC yellows are a little easier to live with for street use.

First off thatnks for all the replys.

Yes Dave 6666 Those are braces that I am talking about. Has any one used them and have comments on how they peerform?

Also after reading a little on the Tom's 40mm kit for the rear brake, I notice that the wheel and tire size seems to effect the rear piston size.

That said, I am running 335-20 rears with PS2's. The front are 19 running 295's PS2's

Thanks in advance
