3rd if stock. Also shift as high as you can w/o hitting the limiter

I have not had my SRT to the drags but I did a lot in my 99 GTS and I assume most of it applies. I consider myself good - not great so take it all with a grain of salt.

The most important thing in the drag race is the first 60 feet. The next most important thing is the burn out - which gives you a decent 60' time. In Oregon, the drags are at night so its pretty cold. I figure a good burn out is worth about 1/10th of a second off my 60 foot times which takes about 3/10ths off the elapsed time by the end of the 1/4.

I always short shift first gear - even with the stock 3.06 gears. Somewhere around 4500-5000 RPM. I'd still spin in 2nd gear a little bit but by the time my short spin is done, the car is in its max torque range (3500-4300 range). BTW - I tend to drive the torque curve rather than the horsepower curve. I was thinking max HP is somewhere around 5200 rather than 5600 (may be wrong) but the GTS pulled like a monster from about 3500-4500 RPM.

I power shift my 2-3 about 5600 RPM which means stay on the gas, bounce the rev limiter and let it rip. Careful on this one though because getting the rear end loose at 70mph is pretty scary.

I run 3rd gear right up to redline and do another power shift. REALLY careful here because I have had it come loose but I don't think it ever did with the stock gears (I run 3.55s now).

I had the stock GTS and started at 13.2 (spun too much) and worked my way down to an eventual 12.18 before changing gears and adding more power. It just takes lots of practice to get it right.

Anyhow - hope this helps and remember - its worth what you paid for it :)

The SRT is much different. It has a higher hp peak rpm and taller tires. The combo results in a need for higher rpm shifts and keeping it in third (maxes out around 123 I believe). Shift it like a Gen II and you will be slower than a Gen II.

Thanks for the reply. I have been drag racing forever but just trying to make the most of my 2-3 runs on saturday without having to learn by trying different things. I have heard several times that the SRT is quite differnent than the gen 1&2, especially the shift points. Most have been saying all the way up without hitting the rev limiter. Thanks for the replies and any more appreciated. :usa:

Eagle,

Initially, I'd shift at the shift light. This light comes on at 5700 rpm, but is behind the actual engine speed, meaning you will be shifting about 5800 - 6000 depending upon your reaction time, anticipation and timing in general. This is about right but will vary a little bit with each car, air temperature, humidity, track prep, etc.

The rev limiter in my car was preset at 6200. I had WCV reset it to 6400 after I added headers, exhaust and intake mods.

I have a GTS too and it is a very different animal in stock form. Very "torquey" but runs out of breath at about 54-5500. The SRT-10 wants to spin higher.

This car is very difficult to launch compared to other cars I have driven and a bit slow to shift. Tires break loose a high speeds and the stock diff isn't very friendly at the drags. Like you, I had dragged a bunch, but still haven't mastered this car, now due largely to mods and power level. I intend to continue to practice every chance I get ... and so should you.

Good luck,

Dan
