i took my 2002 final edition gts to get dyno'd today. weather sucked ( 90 degree plus and humid with off and on showers)

the car has 1200 miles and only mods are borla exhaust, hi flow cats and filters and smooth tubes.

dyno numbers were 415.2 hp and 450.7 torque.

my questions are...

1. is this about right or did the hot humid weather rob we of some power??

2. the guy only brought it up to 5500 rpms , not redline. it that where max hp would have been anyway??

3. air fuel ratio was right at 13 from 2-3500 rpms then dipped to 12 all the way up to 5500 rpms. is this good or too rich/lean??

thanks

Your hp numbers would not have been higher beyond 5500rpm, and your power is very good for a creampuff.

Fuel mixtures are about right, what was the dyno opperator using to get the air/fuel? If it is one of those in the tail pipe things dont even bother posting about it, my nose is more accurate.

Even dyno jet has stopped selling these tail sniffers due to the slow reacting nature of where they are.

On my friends dyno jet he tested on of these units out compared to his Motec air/fuel analyzer. When the Motec was showing 13-1 the tail pipe unit was showing 14-1. Every test had delayed results, it took seconds for the tail pipe unit to catch up to the real air/fuel monitor.

If you want to get real air/fuel numbers you need to use a wideband O2 sensor in place of your factory sensor attached to a Motec/Horriba/AEM etc reading unit.

All of your power numbers seem fine. A cooler day would gain a few HP more but you are making about 475-485HP at the crank, and that's pretty good for your mild breathing mods.

Hmm,interesting, about 7hp more than the average FE from what I've seen on other posts, and my Mopar Borla catback will be here Monday : ) Got a good price on it too.

My '02 gts with no cats and ballenger cat back and smooth tubes did 411 rwhp and 446 rwtq. That was before I had 10k miles on the car, I just had the ballenger headers installed and car has mor 10k on it, it put 449 rwhp and 480 rwtq. It was a different dyno.

at 8K miles, I put down 425 RWHP with tubes, filters, B&B cat-back, HF cats, and VEC-1. However, I plan to go back to the Dyno sometime soon, as that run was in just about the worst conditions possible. It was humid-(raining), the car was heat soaked, (5th pull, from tuning the vec-1), and the last pull scared me off from tuning furthur because I developed a "dip" in the pull at 5800 RPM, and thought it could be a float, knock...who knew. Only to find out later that ever single viper dyno'd that day, whether or not it had a VEC-1, dipped at 5800 after the 4th pull... figures, its what you get for going first...lol.

You mean like the dip at 5,800 in my graph here too?

Strange...this too was the 6th run for me that day. Waited 15 minutes between each pull to cool down. I'll check the other graphs when I get home tonight for this dip...

Dan:

I would be careful about trying to get immediate results from tuning a VEC 1 on a dyno. I would talk to Sean to find out if that is possible. I know when I tried the VEC-1 on the bottle, changes did not seem to take place instantly. You very well may make more hp, however, I don't know if the route there is so easy. Your last setting change may not affect the engine till some time after the pull.

429 RWHP and 435 RWHP for this FE. The Dynos were done about 4 months apart and on different dynos (Both of them were Dyno Jets).

K&N's, Cat Back, and tubes.

Here is an idea....I think you can get better numbers on the dyno by applying instant power at the start of the test. F-in nail it!!! The dyno operators won't like it due to wear on the dyno assy.

If you gradually increase power while on the dyno, you'll get lower numbers. So punch it! And the hell with the dyno machine!!

You will overcome the inertia of the dyno sooner, by applying full power instantly. The dyno mass will be spinning at a higher rotational speed, sooner .. than if you applied power gradually.......producing more energy per unit time.

So if that makes sense to you, then floor-it, as soon as your chart goes into motion, and get your best numbers.

NEXUS-6, IDENTICAL dip when compared to my graphs and the others dyno'd that day.

JACK-B, I did gain HP immediatly on the dyno with the VEC-1... 25 RWHP actally. at 0/0 I pt down a little over 400, then in the 425 range with 4/8. Of course, 0/0 is still not equivalent to no VEC-1 at all, but it definatly shows that the unit does do something.

My various VEC1 tune runs resulted in immediate change as well...as a control, I even went down a few notches to make sure the thing was working/changes were occurring and after gaining over 3 runs, we dropped down on the 4th (lower settings) before dialing back up again.

Sean suggests in his installation notes that you can dial the VEC1 2 clicks at a time followed by a quick stab to WOT...not sure if that works or not but running it out on the dyno sure did.

Daniel - btw, I went back and looked for the dip in the other 5 runs...wasn't there. Only occured in my last run, just like you said...
