Actually, filling the tank to the full level is an attempt to minimize the air filled space above the gasoline, thereby markedly decreasing the chance of water vapor ( contained in the air ) condensing when the temp drops...sending the water to the bottom of tank, and potentially into fuel line, etc. And ,yes, this can also be harmful to a metal tank. This may not sound like much of a problem for Vipers, but still worth preventing in my opinion.(a careful pilot ALWAYS tops off tanks at end of flight if staying on ground overnight or through broad temp swings...such water in tanks has downed more than one aircraft...especially on or shortly after takeoff).
