\"I\" status for a month? What gives?

My Sapphire Blue/Striped ACR has been in "I" status for a month
now! What gives, anyone know? I status means finished but not released for shipping. I thought for sure the car would be shipped just after the new year, but here we are almost into February and still not shipped!

Waiting *****, but at least I will be picking up my Yellow Z06
this weekend! Maybe that will help to pass the time.

Re: \"I\" status for a month? What gives?

If it makes you feel any better I status means " Final Inspection," and the average time ( I was told last year by a knowledgeable Plant employee ) is 42 days. There are 9 steps in the I status and this is the phase where they really check out the cars. The car will then go to J status ( normally for a short period )and finally to KZ. When a car hits KZ status is usually is on the Dealer's doorstep fairly soon. All these things can vary , due to delays in shipping ( weather , availability, etc.), but hopefully this will give you a handle on where your car is. Congrats, the Blue/Silver cars have been very rare so far this year - in fact all Blue cars have been.

Venomuus- Sounds like a great car! Have fun with it.
Bill- Thanks for the info, but I would feel better when the car
gets here! Are the Blue cars rare due to lack of demand? Is Dodge
just not thrilled with producing Blue cars? I do like the Yellow
but wish they would have put White pearl or Silver Stripes on them!
Thanks again,
Steve

Re: \"I\" status for a month? What gives?

My Black '93 RT was in "I" for nearly 3 months. It was a full 16 months from the time my order was accepted until my car arrived. You think you have it bad?

Bill's right about the time in Inspection - they hand-polish the car, adjust every panel until it is perfect, perform a severe leak test, etc. With the exception of the '94 model year when production went to about 3000+ units, Vipers have been worked over fanatically to ensure quality.

Waiting for delivery is a common trait for nearly all purchasers of new Vipers.

Since Dodge somewhat does specific colors at a time, it's just that they haven't produced many Blue cars yet. From customers and dealers that call us, we all seem to be in agreement that the Blue is going to be very popular. They are rare because so few have been sent out so far. You will be very pleased when it arrives.

Bill,
Thanks again for the info. The "42" days thing is that from start
to finish or just for "I" status? Either way it seems very long to me.

Re: \"I\" status for a month? What gives?

I wonder about that "polishing" phase. My '00 red gts came with LOADS of swirl marks that I'm still "Zainoing" (Z5) out. I also had to use claybar to remove a lot of surface contaminants on the paint. The hood also needed a bit of alignment, which I did myself with advice from folks here.

Don't get me wrong, I love the car. I'll just love it more when I'm done detailing it. I just don't see a whole lot of factory time in the "fit and finish" stages. Which gives me something to do on weekends!

And I know the dealership did not contribute to the swirl marks because I asked them not to detail the car prior to delivery. I just didn't trust them to be nearly as ANAL as I am.

There are dealerships (Woodhouse) that do take the same care I do. I will be contacting Bill P. on my next transaction.

Re: \"I\" status for a month? What gives?

That '42-day' average is from initial gateline entry to Reliable shipment and dealer invoicing (KZ).

I status cars are NOT waiting for a truck (That is J)

I-status is indeed "Inspection." It can take 3 days...or 3 months! {only if a part is inspected as flawed, and needs to be ordered. Some cars have sat months waiting for wheels (96GTS), Facia( Silver,) Hoods ( various stripers.)

THIS IS NO LONGER THE CASE !!! Why? CAAP now has "floating specialists" (my term) that coordinate in real time with parts vendors and keep the flow of parts timely...and help schedule Vipers that DO have a full compliment of parts ready.

This Inspection process "usually" takes a while longer with STRIPED Vipers. Why? This is to do a meticulous alignment of the strips on the panels. It used to take even longer, when stripes were closer together and went completely thru the "rear closure panel."

The finish/glaze process truly does not take but a couple hours. However, CAAP inspects the car fully, then finishes, then inspects AGAIN and does any more touch-up necessary. The hi-presure water test can take numerous 'tweaks' if a leak is discovered. Or, it can breeze right thru.

A small panel defect, discovered in the hi-intensity lights of the inspection station, can result in a Viper waiting for a new doorskin, or worse...striped part. All OUT of sequence, and hence the unusual delay.

Becasue of this, VIPER has the lowest complaint ratio on fit/finish complaints of any vehicle in the "CHRYSLER" product line
