..at the end of the new Chevrolet commercial ,where the C6 drives up a truck, the music being played is "Magic Carpet Ride"!
Next they'll try to put a 500hp engine in a Z06. :smirk: Monkey see Monkey do!

everyone copies everyone else. GTS looks like daytona cobra looks like 250 GTO ferrari its just the way things work. both are nice designs like always the 1800 a year SRT vs. the 35,000 a year vette(production volume) i like the idea of more exclusivity. not to mention lets get a chance to drive the new vette and see what its about. Bring on the BlueDevil. So DC will turn up the heat on the SRT or street coupe it they make one.

Fortunately the SRT fascia produces an image of a mean frown, the C6 fascia on the other hand looks like a happy smile face.

I have to admit I was dissapointed in the C6. At least they got rid of the pop-ups. Pretty bad though when the new Mustang looks so much better it takes the cover of Motor Trend leaving the C6 a little part on the top edge.

The new Motor Trend says the new Corvette COUPE will do 0-60 in 4.1 as an automatic. Scary what the new Z06 will probably do. Probably easily beat the current Viper. Come on Viper coupe!!!!!!!!!!

We can all be dissapointed that Chevy copied the SRT, but in the end the fact that DC came up with such a bland design is to blame. Once they went mainstream with the looks of the SRT it was innevitable that it would look like other cars.

I hope DC does something to regain an edge. As it stands now the looks of the Vette are equal to the Viper (in fact I bet a lot of people will mistake them), and the performance of the Z06 will likely be equal. It is pretty hard to argue that there is a compelling reason to pay ~$30k more for the Viper.

Sorry, but I am very dissapointed in DC.

3 posts and nobody challenges this guy......Sigh.........TK, my man, reread the article...MT ESTIMATED PERFORMANCE DATA. They also say 12.5 in the quarter mile. I don't care WHAT that sucker does 0-60 estimated or not, if it does a 12.5 quarter this tired old bastage and his "old" 2000 GTS can take it. Well, golly I guess so, I've got 50 more HP right out the door. Also reread the article ONCE MORE and you will see that Motor trends astute data chart says... "6-speed OR 4 speed automatic. This was not a road test of anything other than the most verbose PR talking head Chevy could summon to the phone in response to Motor Trends frantic deadline call.

Vipah spill the beans, are you saying that when the Z06 is released in 2006 it will cost between $50K -$60K? Somehow I find that hard to believe. I think it will be much higher.

SRT,

I'm just going by current MSRP and assuming that both will increase about the same annually. I think that a current the Z06 is around $30k less than an SRT. I may be off by a few k, but not too much.

I like to see all the competition amongst the manufacturers. I just wish DC would make the Viper the flag ship performance car for the company, not the SLR.

Lee is correct. Estimated. And estimated by MT of all rags...

Also, for what it's worth, Motor Trend selected an electric car as their Car of the Year.

I mean......

REALLY.

I am really bummed at how much resemblance the headlights of the new vets have to the vipers....not to mention the rest of the car.
That was the most distinguishing thing that I used to notice first when a viper was approaching. There was absolutely no mistaking the viper from a mile away. Now I will have to take a double take to distinguish the two.....very disappointing.
I still think the SRT looks better overall but kinda makes me happy that I still have a Gen 2 viper...at least from the side and rear there will be no mistaking that it is a viper and not a vet.

Same thing came to mind when I saw the commercial. It looks like the Corvette copied the SRT-10, 360 Modena, and a little of the Cadallic sports car (bottom front). Interesting!

I have been thinking about the initial post this weekend and finally got to see the commercial. I was at VOI 2 in Monterey and Bob Lutz intentionally had red vipers with the yellow decals and wheels to snub Ferrari who was complaining that Viper red was Ferrari red. I wonder if "Magic Carpet Ride" at the ending of the commercial is his way doing the same thing to Dodge.

The Vette has all the same styling cues as the Viper, but they are all toned down and smaller. The one thing no one has mentioned yet is weight. Autoweek said only "about the same". About the same as a current standard Vette, or the Z06??? If it is not under 3100 lbs, look for 12.5-12.9 in the quarter. It won't be faster (or as fast as) a current Z06. Imagine the crying of current Z06 owners if it is....One more SMALL point, the 'on sale' date is SEPTEMBER! 9 months to go for Chevys new 'baby'

IMO, the interior *****

The Vette looks like it will be a pretty nice car, but it is no SRT and will never be able to create a stir the way an SRT or any Viper can. It should be an excellent daily driving sportscar, but in no time at all will be as boring as a C5.

The only stir that the SRT seemed to create was utter disappointment.

Sorry guys, but the new Vette is pretty much equal to the new Viper. Good bye to the days where the Viper styling was king of the hill, and the performance was not touchable by anything close in price.

The only ones to blame are DC for coming out with a new generation Viper that didn't keep all the cues from the earlier ones.

Actually, the new Vette is equal to the OLD Viper performancewise. The SRT still blows it away in performance.

We haven't seen the Z06 numbers for the new Vette yet, and the 03 Vette is pretty darn close to the new Viper.

What we have seen are specs. 400 hp does not = 500hp unless the weight is like 20% less, which it isn't. Chevy hasn't done it yet.

I guess my real point is that it shouldn't even be debatable. Like it was with the Gen II.

No one would even argue that the Viper's styling was far superior nor would they argue about the performance. It wasn't even close.

Chevy has closed the gap in performance. DC messed up on styling (IMO) and left the door open.

-Maybe disappointing to you, as the SRT BLOWS the old Vipers away in terms of performance. I have an 03 Z06 and the 04 SRT 10, its going to take at least a 550hp Z06 to come anywhere close to the SRT 10.

I notice you didn't compare SRT styling to the old Viper. :D

We'll see what the new Z06 Vette does. Keep in mind who is at the helm now.

If they are as close as I think Lutz will make them then I think it is really hard to justify the extra cost for the Viper. But until we see real numbers it is all speculation on perfomance. As for styling, well they look pretty darn equal to me.

vipah, you seem to be hung up on the looks of the "old viper", which is totally subjective. I'll just tell you, I never liked it enough to buy one, while I have an 04 on it's way.
To each his own!

-I didnt like the SRT 10 looks when it first came out, but after seeing it in person, it has grown on me and I like it alot. I like the GTS looks also, but I was after performance too, and having 500+ hp right from the start and seeing the numbers the SRT put out, no way did I want the older models, they werent that much better, if any, than my Z06. And by the time the Z06 comes out again, the SRT 10 will have a coupe out too- and the Comp. Coupe looks way better than the old GTS's, so a new coupe will too
