Do you have to just buy cannisters of Nitrogen or is there a way to generate/separate nitrogen from ambient air? Anyone do the nitrogen fill thing at home? Thanks.

My local oil change place ( not a national franchise ) has a machine, attaching ofcourse to the valve stem, that vacumes out the air. (can put enough vacume to break the seating of tire to rim) They set the amount of vacume they want to use (about one atmosfere or 16 lbs), remove the air, turn a valve and pump in the nitrogen. Cost is $5 / tire, and any time I need more, it will drop but at a slower rate than using air, they will "top it off". I use 29lbs/tire - cold - as recomended. They have to jack up cars to do this, so I just removed my tires and rims at the house when cleaning them and took them down and had them done. I'm seeing more and more places in this area offering this service. Probably not for everyone, but then neither are Vipers.:2tu:

So what are the advantages of Nitrogen in your tires?

Mainly less susceptible to changes in ambient air temp and thus less fluctuations in pressure during hard driving. Some have also said lower moisture content and less aggressive to the internals of the tire but I think that might be more a function of having a good filter system, even on a conventional air system. There may be other advantages that I am not aware of.

Last I checked, the air around us is almost 80% nitrogen, which is FREE.

Also, most cars use aluminum rims, which don't rust.

Just another way for someone to sell you something you don't need!

Chief benefit of Nitrogen is that tire pressures do not vary as much due to temperatures. Track tires heat up a bunch and pressure rises. With nitrogen pressures will stay more stable.

Oxygen also helps decompose tires from the inside, weakening them, however I believe this to be a relatively minor benefit of nitrogen.

Costco use this with all new tire installations. They can purge and reinflate your current tires too. (don't know the price)

Thanks guys. I guess I am wondering if there is a relatively economical home option yet or if going to places like Costco or your local service station is your only option.

If not, I gues I'll just stick with the trusty air compressor in the garage.

They are called cylinders... And you can get them at local welding supply houses. You'll need a regulator too of course.

I work across the street from an Air Liquide nitrogen plant. If you give me 3 acres and 50 million bucks, I'll have a tap installed in your garage from your new nitrogen plant.

Nader, is that the portable fill system for the Moton system? Out of curiosity, how much does the system cost, how many tires do you think it would fill and are the N cannisters readily available? Thanks!

I think another benefit is the nitrogen molecule is larger which means a nitrogen tire will deflate at a much slower rate than a normal fill tire. Which would be another reason not to have those stupid tire pressure sensors cluttering up our Vipers.

Yes but a simple valve swap and it can be used to inflate/topoff tires.

Out of curiosity, how much does the system cost, $499

Not sure how many it will fill in one tankfull since I havent tryed to fill a tire from flat. I will find out.

Yes nitrogen refills are done at your local welding supply store.
