From a Dodge dealer website, regarding the shorty OEM headers...

*Same as 1998-02 production

*439 stainless steel contruction

*23 lbs. lighter than production cast iron manifolds

*Includes: mounting hardware, high temperature heat shields, gaskets and header-to-catalyst pipe (welding required)

P5007019 Street header - 1992-97 RT/10 & GTS

The question... Assuming the "tie bar" is the webbing between the header ports, why does it need to be ground on <98 Vipers? Are 98+ head bolts different or is this applicable only when fitted to GENI engines?

Thanks

Grinding off tie bars only when adding these headers to GEN 1 engine - I did it. Tried grinding, and grinding, and grinding to get head bolt clearance; finally gave up and cut them off.

Same here. Had to cut them off very close to the flange on one side as well. The difference is Gen I had the tie bar on top and Gen II at the bottom. There must be some difference to the head bolt or position between them.
