Metric or Standard?

Hey all. Long story short - my Viper sits in Ohio where I work full time, and my actual home is in PA. I only get to come home every other weekend, which is why I decided to keep the Viper (in secure storage) in Ohio, where I spend more time.

I have to do some minor work on the car (swapping out a steering wheel and replacing the battery) next weekend in Ohio, so I'm preparing a "travel bag" of tools to do the work.

I'm just wondering if the Viper uses Metric or Standard bolts - It's a 2000 GTS. Based on the year I'd say Metric, but being that it's hand-built in America, it could very well be standard.

I'm home now, so I can't just go out and check. So I thought I'd ask before I start packing my tools.

Thanks.

Explaining Viper things to you
It has both. I actually have an Excel spreadsheet I put together for the garage where I have all the wrench sizes listed from stuff I've done. So I can go under the car next time with the right tools. I have not done the steering wheel, so no comments there. However, there's a great write-up in the Illustrated section on the battery, including tools needed.

Ooops... You're not a VCA member. Can't go there. :D

Well, guess I'll just load up the bag. Good thing I spent over two years as an automotive tech.

Can anyone at least tell me what kind of screws/bolts hold the bottom of the steering column in place? I just did my wife's clock spring and it needed torx bits... Stupid Ford...

The column cover takes a T20 torx bit. I have found the majority of the stuff on this car to be standard. The steering wheel nut will probably be a large metric size (21mm most likely). Be careful with the airbag.

It uses both...its like the engineers had a metric vs. standard battle and both got their way with the Viper yet neither really won. Definitely packs both sets.

Oh, and the battery is pretty easy. There's really no trick to it. Take the panel off behind the left rear wheel - remove the wheel of course. The battery is a side post, so 8mm bolts hold on the cables just like a GM. And like a GM the battery is held down by a single clamp on the bottom.

You just gotta keep rubbing that in, don't you? :)

T20 Torx - got it, thanks. I don't know that I actually need to remove the column since I'm just getting the wheel off. Anyone know what size bolts hold in the airbag module? I just removed my wife's this morning and it used a 5mm!! I had NEVER used that socket before. It doesn't really matter - I'm bringing all my 1/4-drive sockets anyways, and I'll bring all the big ones for the wheel I guess, too. Her car used a 24mm for the wheel. And yeah I know about the airbag - I've taken them out of all of my cars now!

Thanks guys. I'll join VCA as soon as my cars quit breaking down...
