Nope,

I too thought they would lower the gas guzzler. However, it is $3K. Total Sticker price is $83,795.

I don't have my paperwork handy, but I think invoice is $72,471, then add $3k gas tax and $800 shipping. Which would total $76,271. I think mine also had some other crap (advertising...) that brought the total to about $76,400.

Farr,

Are you sure you don't have the latest revision on the guzzler tax?

It definitely was $3000, but then, supposedly, probably on 12/14, it was lowered to $1800.

I've heard about this lowering from 2 sources.

If you go to any Five Star Dealer that has rec'd an SRT (i.e. Roanoke www.romocoinc.com or woodhouse.com) and search the new inventory you will see all of the SRT's that they currently have. Most people will be picking these up after Jan. 1 for Luxury tax reasons.

Once you pull up the inventory, click on a specific car, then you have the option to "See the window Sticker". It shows the tax at $3,000 - which is what my car says. Thus, I think it is $3K, but if it is lower, I will be fine with that too. However, the true window stickers do have the owner's name - these online ones do not. However, this is not new for '03. I know they did it in 2001.

My estimate of $76,400 for invoice included Gas Guzzler Tax, but excludes any other taxes, as those are determined by location.

Cheers.

Did you notice the sticker has the old one eyed snake on the top rather than the new Fangs.

I checked the IRS web site and did not see any changes to the tax. I also checked Form 6197 which is used to report the tax and the rates have not changed. Unless Dodge has upped the MPG rating from the Gen II's MPG, it appears that the tax will still be $3,000. A brief explanation of the tax follows:

Gas Guzzler Tax

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 established a Gas Guzzler Tax on the sale of new model year vehicles whose fuel economy fails to meet certain statutory levels. The gas guzzler tax applies only to cars (not trucks) and is collected by the IRS.

The fuel economy figures used to determine the Gas Guzzler Tax are different from the fuel economy values provided on this Website. The tax does not depend on your actual on-the-road mpg, which may be more or less than the EPA published value. The purpose of the Gas Guzzler Tax is to discourage the production and purchase of fuel inefficient vehicles. The amount of any applicable Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturer will be disclosed on the automobile's fuel economy label (the window sticker on new cars).

GAS GUZZLER TAX
Unadjusted MPG(combined)* Tax
at least 22.5 No tax
at least 21.5, but less than 22.5 $1000
at least 20.5, but less than 21.5 $1300
at least 19.5, but less than 20.5 $1700
at least 18.5, but less than 19.5 $2100
at least 17.5, but less than 18.5 $2600
at least 16.5, but less than 17.5 $3000
at least 15.5, but less than 16.5 $3700
at least 14.5, but less than 15.5 $4500
at least 13.5, but less than 14.5 $5400
at least 12.5, but less than 13.5 $6400
less than 12.5 $7700

The combined fuel economy MPG value (55 % city, 45 % highway) is used to determine tax liability. The MPG value is also adjusted slightly to account for differences in test procedures made since the base year.

Since this is an approximate calculation, the actual gas guzzler tax may be off by one tax bracket.

One more tax point: There may be some confusion between the gas guzzler tax and the luxury tax, as the luxury tax is scheduled to expire after 2002. The luxury tax is imposed on the first retail sale of a passenger vehicle with a price exceeding the base amount. The seller of the vehicle is liable for the luxury tax. For 2002, the tax is 3% of the amount the sales price exceeds the base amount of $40,000. However, the base amount is increased for the following vehicles.
