In Road and Tracks Latest issue there is an Article (Power Trip) which compares the Twin Turbo Porsche Coupe to the 2003 Viper Convertible. The photos at speed show the Viper with the top down. Please tell me they didn't road test the Viper that way! there's at least a half second or more lost in acceleration with the top down. I emailed Motor Trend for confirmation. The top was probably up, but what a slanted article it would be if they did test the viper in its slowest configuration. A point of interest: The Viper SRT tested by R/T in April 2003 goes 0-100 in 8.9 seconds now for this comparison testing it goes 9.2.

PS as an aside does anyone know where I can get phony state license plates made. ( its a gag gift ) I see them at the swap meets all the time.

Considering all the biased crap I've read and heard about, I wouldn't be surprised if they did the tests that way.

If you are referring to the high speed test by Motor Trend the answer may be straight forward. Motor Trend had this in an earlier TV episode and showed Justin Bell driving with the top up. That was for the top speed portion. I taped it so can look back later and see if it was up or down during the other tests.

Motor Trend had gotten the best numbers so far withe SRT-10 Viper with 0-60 in 3.9, 1/4 mile in 11.77@124MPH and 0-100MPH in 8.36, with 0-100-0 in 12.17 seconds.

0-100MPH in 9.2 sec. is much slower than earlier GTS tests, so I guess that Porsche wanted the 996 Twin Turbo to look comparatively faster, and likely had promised more money for future C&D advertising, so little details like running with the top down, and granny shifting the Viper might have occured.

What were the other performance stats for the two cars (for our amusement and disgust)?

I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't choose to put a professional Porsche racecar driver in the 996TT, and one of the journalist's grandmother driving the SRT-10 Viper (because she was in town and asked to drive). ;)

I do wonder (not really)why they didn't run the SRT-10 Viper against the $85K+ 911 C4 Cabriolet?
Hmmmm...

At least we can feel lucky that they didn't run the new Viper against the M3 convertible in an "Ultimate Performance Competition", and choose the BMW because it had a backseat and got better gas mileage.

Transition from acceleration to braking :
Porsche .5 sec
Viper .7 sec

Thanks for the info.
There's just a little difference between 12.17 and 13.9 seconds!!
Even if you figure a 0.7 sec transition delay, R&T is still 1 full second slower.
And between 8.36 and 9.2 seconds is a huge gap as well!

M/T got from 100-0 in 274 ft, and 60-0 in a record breaking 97 ft with the SRT-10 Viper.

I'm still hoping that someone like Popular Mechanics thrashes a new SRT-10 Viper and runs mid 11s with it with some expert driver.

Interesting...The 911 is doing the GTS numbers in the 0-100 in 8.8 and the 13sec 0-100-0..........Not sure how in gods name they got an SRT to run that slow.......Im done with magazines.....We all know that theres no way an SRT is doing 0-100-0 in only 13.9 when the old GTS did 13's in the same test with those much weaker brakes........
