Is there a safety inspection or something like that to get a salvage car back on the road? Or do you just fix it and plate it?

Chuck ( me new best friend...lol ) - It HAS TO BE inspected and certified before any plating. if yhou drive a uninspected salvage title and you get caught, you're in serious trouble.

Chuck,

I bought my car on a salvage title out of Kentucky. It did have KY plates on the car, but I did not see a recertification in any of the paperwork. Texas did not have a problem collecting my money and issuing me a plate.

I don't think you need a cert., you can total a car cosmeticly and it's fine mechanicly. It's all related to cost. When you go to title it, it comes back with a brandished title because the ins. co. notified the authorities. Comes up in the puter salvaged title. :2tu:

Must vary from state to state.
In NY the car must be inspected and certified by a DMV inspector before plates can be issued. The cannot even be driven to the inspection station. It must be towed.

yes, all states are different, in NY, has to get inspected before plates, plus take about 6 weeks for them to send you the letter about inspection appointments, so send all paper in right after you get the car, so by the time you fix the car, your appointment should be there, i get a lots of salvage cars, have a inspection appointment coming up soon for this new taurus we just fixed, make sure keep all receipt for all parts you bought to fix the car.....later

Francisco,

My family sometimes thinks that I am "certified" crazy, but I still haven't officially received a certification. Maybe the papers are in the mail.

My friend bought a 911 Cabrio in L.A that had a salvage title because of a light strip job from a theft. The owner replaced all parts with new ones and he's driven the stink out of it and got a super deal. We flew to L.A., drove to Fresno and back, in order to check it out and had it shipped home to Cincinnati.

It all depends on state. FL is probably the most lax in its title search (which is why its never good to buy a FL car) so you should have little difficulty.

The DOT requirs that you provide proof of rebuild parts though on any salvage car. This prevents the use of stolen parts to fix up an expensive vehicle. Since I didn't replace any bad parts on my car before re-titling it my trip through was gravy, but if you have to replace a motor (ect...) you'll need to have proof of purchase on parts + if parts are used you'll need the VIN of the donor car + proof of legitimacy of body shop doing the work. After that its just a matter of proving the car is roadworthy.

Hope that helps...
