Yes we bought the Viper knowing that gas mileage is not great on these cars but when I am getting 9 MPG while driving on the highway, I can tell you that is no normal.
So Tiger, which gear, what speed and how long did you do this test to get 9mpg. I'm not criticizing, just want to get the details.

In 6th at the speed limit?

Yes, that was the whole point of his original thread. He has
been averaging many tankfuls at 9mpg which was close to my
weekend average at VIR.

Also for those who care a little more about their cars than
"just fill it up" tracking MPG is a great tool for monitoring
overall drivetrain health. A plung in MPG is usually the
first sign of a serious problem.

But I agree that in order for this to work you need to track
it religiously over the course of a long period of time - Many,
many times I've had a 26mpg fill-up followed immediatly by a
13mpg fill-up. That's why I don't say my car gets 26mpg on hwy
- every pump and every tank is different.

Flame me if you want, but I can never understand the logic behind these threads about MPG.
First, when the fuel gets down to around a 1/4-1/8 tank, fill it up!
Second, these cars range so drastically in MPG depending how you drive them. Anywhere from 4 MPG to as much as 24 MPG (about 1150RPM in 6th is about 60mph if I remember correctly).
I bought my car to drive it the way it was meant to be driven and MPG is the least of my concerns.
Why is it that these guages ****? Never had a problem with mine. Never run outta gas once. But then maybe your gas stations are 400 miles apart?

Yes we bought the Viper knowing that gas mileage is not great on these cars but when I am getting 9 MPG while driving on the highway, I can tell you that is no normal. That is the reason for the thread. Yes these cars get horrible gas mileage but not that bad.

No joke, we are talking 5th and 6th (6th mostly) at aroun 70 MPH. Join the club of confusion.

As stated above, pretty much 6th gear and cruising at 70 - 80 MPH when I get those readings. No joke, I leave from Central NJ to get to Long Island or vice versa and I use about a 1/2 tank of gas. That is about a 80 mile trip!!

Man, I cannot find that in his original post. Help me out there Bonkers.

With all talk about MPG, is there a secondary device that we can use to see how much gas we are using or that is left in the tank. Hopefully this example will help you understand what I mean:

In BMWs part of their computer tells you how long you have to go in Miles until you run out of gas.

Is there something like this that people sell aftermarket that we can use? Just was wondering since the gauges in these cars ****!

I may not be a mind reader like you, but I don't need to track milage to know if something is wrong with my car.

Mind-reader? Missed that one. Not all viper owners are
mechnacially inclinded. In fact I know several who couldn't
identify detonation if their lives depended on it. For
folks like this (I admit I fall somewhat into that catagory)
MPG tracking is an easy and almost definitive method for
seeing something you'd otherwise not recognize. Tiger is a
perfect example - not questioning his mechanical skills,
but its perfectly obvious that something, somewhere is not
right with his car. It drives fine, techs can't find
anything wrong, but looking at the numbers you cannot say
his car is in perfect health.

I agree with you Bonkers. I will be taking the car to FL next week and tracking the mileage rigorously and I will let you guys know what the numbers are.

Hmmmm, unless I have the lightest feet in the forum, I get around 16 mpg in the city which is just over 200 miles to a tank. I have managed on longer trips to average 24-27 mpg on the highway. I wanted to call Dodge when on one leg of a trip (not downhill for the skeptics among us) where I ran in 6th gear at 65 mph (because of rotating trooper escorts) for an entire tank and averaged 27.1 mpg and check to see if I had set a mpg record for the Viper. I think the lowest mpg on a tank I ever got was like 13.5 mpg and I was constantly starting with wheelspin and accelerating to as fast as I felt comfortable without getting multiple tickets. My ignition system and injectors are stock.

Regards,
Aaron

I put a Scan Gauge II in both my Excursion and Cobra. A very helpful item indeed. I got it, along with the mount that install the gauge above the rear view mirror from MGT Motorsports. Their Blendmount is great as it bolts to the rear mirror post and holds the gauge.

Here it is in the Ex...
