My understanding is no. It in fact limits the frequency range that goes to the subs so even if you install a pair of nice JBL subs in place of the cheaper stock rear speakers, it doesn't sound any better.
Others know more that I on this subject, but IMO a full transplant is required for significantly better audio.
The amp in the back of my car has a switch which i believe from memory restricts the signal to the subs as just bass or a broader spectrum. It's just a I/II type of switch.
I played iwth it at one time but don't think I really noticed much difference when I installed new speakers.
