I wonder what the best gear ratio would be for a stock viper in the 1/4 mile. It seems to me after trying a couple of gears 3.73 and 3.55 I think it should be somewhere in between. I redline 4th at the trap with the 3.73 and seems a bit under powered at the trap with the 3.55 I am still working on the launch with the 3.55 with the first time last night with the 3.55 and the OS Giken diff quite a difference over the 3.73. First run bogged down on the launch 12.7 bad bad bad the next two times came off a bit harder and spun the tires, the 4th time I started out a bit less and turned a 12.030 not bad for my last run it gave me some hope. The 3.73 turned 11.88 121 and the 3.55 turned 12.030 117 mph. Anyone have any thoughts with this setup (stock) Going back next wed for more practice.

Hi all,

I'm new to the drags and just starting to like it a LOT. My best time ( and first time) was 11.72 and 126.99. My 2009 conv viper is pure stock , right out of the showroom floor.

IMHO I think the 0 to 60' is the critical time, I ve got no problem at the top 1/8 and will often be 20mph faster than the guy with a lesser ET.

I will be focusing on less adrenilin and easing off the start line to avoid breaking traction from spinning tires.

on my bad times I was 2.5-2.9 sec in the 60'. I got to fix that!

So far best 60' time with the 3.73 was 1.48 with the 3.55 was 1.795 running MT drag radials with 12 lbs tire pressure. Also want to mention my stock viper is an 04. My last run yesterday was my best out of the 4 with the 3.55 .

3.55 gears 3.73
R/T .117 R/T ,571
60' 1.795 60' 1.750
330' 5.101 330' 5.013
660' 7.793 660' 7.701
mph 92.57 mph 92.86
1000' 10.104 1000' 9.991
1/4 12.030 1/4 11.910
mph 117.04 mph 118.06
Now you see its all fairly close. So these are my cards any thoughts on this gear setup??

That's quite impressive! First time ? You don't leave yourself a whole lot of room for improvement

The MT's must be quite a bit taller than the stockers to get thru the traps in 4th gear with the 3.73. What did you turn when you had the 1.48 60'? Shoulda been mid-low 11's:dunno:

no my best time was 11.91. I usually have the RPM past 5500 at the trap with 3.73 its very close to or past fuel shut off. and I don't want to go to 5th. the 1.48 60' time was a good run but I had hit the limit and the fuel turned off. So I went to the 3.55 to eleminate that issue but, I still think a gear in between the 3.55 and the 3.73 might be the ticket. Going out next Wed to try again I think a lot of it is me. Its truely a different gear than the 3.73. I am close to my 11.91 with a 12.030 so I hope I can beat that time. The OS Giken rear end seems to be working well. The drag tickets seem fairly close.

from the Mission Raceway Park last night my best;
R/T.388
60' 2.25
330 5.541
1/8 8.091
MPH 94.83
1000 10.296
1/4 12.166
MPH 120.41

Running everything pure stock. I need to launch better. I get my better time easing out in the first 2 gears...something almost impossible to do.

New back rubber next year. 18" wheels with ?? tires suggestions?

Must be "D O T" approved. Pure slicks will move me out of my class.

A good tire for the strip is the Micky Thompson drag radial on 18" rims. They are DOT approved. I don't recommend them for the street although legal the handling has a lot to be desired. I just put them on for racing.

OK thanks I'll try that, I've seen a lot of good posts for that tire. I'll get 2 new 18" rims for my 09 SRT10 conv. I have 19" rear now but I'm told the 18" rims will fit.

On a stock 08 or 09 SRT I would say a 3.23 would be the ideal gearing for the car at the strip or anywhere else for that matter IMO. 3.33 or 3.42 could also be a nice all around gear as well but I would lean toward the 3.23 if it was me. My friend put 3.55's in his 09 and I thought it was way too much.

OK..a few things here...Im pretty sure your claim of 1.4 60 foot is a typo on your part or the tracks part...Stock srt10 on stock rubber aint turnen no 1.4 60 foot...

Now on the other hand a 2.2 60 foot on the way to a 12.1 at 120 mph tells me somthing.....

With my 03 srt10 I could routinely get 1.9-2.1 60 foots on the stock rubber...

Get that 60 foot down to a 2.0 and you will easily run a 11.8 at 121 mph on your current set up....

The srt10's are differant from any other car Ive drag raced ( vette/rt10 viper/camaro/nsx)

They relie soooo much on a good 60 foot and 0-60 mph...Youve got to baby the launch and then also slightly baby the 1-2 shift and then go balls out..

baby them too much and the car will run a poor time...Just a hint to much and you'll spin in 1st and 2nd and run a poor time...get it all right and run an 11...Too me my srt10 took a lot more finess to run a good time than my 99 rt10 did..But the reward was my SRT10 being a few tenths and a few mph faster than my best in the 99 rt10 once I learned how to get her dialed in...

Good luck and please keep us informed

Actually it is not a typo 1.48 or at least that is what my ticket said. MT drag radials cool morning run June 6 2009 Infineion drag strip. I have at least 50 runs and that is my best 60' time. and my best 1/4 is 11.91.
Like I have mentioned before 12lbs of air in the tires. Launch at 1500 rpm After a good burn out. Feather out the clutch and then go no tire spin in first or 2nd just straight out and run to the top of 4th 3.73 gears bring it to 6k at the trap. To bad your not closer. So my friend come on out and join me. So thats the deal no BS here.

Canyon707 and twister,

I think both your advise on the 1 /2nd gear and the launch for a good 60' is the key.

Now the problem is the track is closed for the winter and I have to put my baby in storage for the season, time to go to Cuba!

Thanks again

damn..1.4 60's..Impressive....Man once you get a good run in with a 1.6 or less 60 foot thats easily a low 11 car...

Ive never seen it but I have herd stories of 100 % stock 03-06's running a 11.2 at 124 with just a drag radial/slick

It was a great start but the finish was not what I had hoped for as I hit the fuel shutoff in third as I pushed it. The tires made a world of difference. Now if you really want a good ride the Blue Angels are it. I watched them from a sail boat yesterday in the San Francisco Bay. Now if you want speed those F18 crank it up. I will post some pictures of the show Soon... Rain due here Tuesday Hope it clears for drag racing Wed night.

Stock runflats can net you sub 1.75 60ft times. Just takes the right day and some seat time. My best was 1.72 with many in the 1.75 to 1.8 area.
If you can hit a 1.75 then you can easily run mid elevens.

Exactly ,a 1.4 with the MTs and that car should easily pop low 11s.

My best time was 11.52 with the Runflats. I believe stock gen 3s are good for very low 11s with perfect conditions.
A higher rpm launch with a dragstrip oriented tire would probably knock a quarter second off the time.

At least .25 as the tire Manu CLAIMS .75 seconds on the MT

PS thats why i dont understand the ET of 11.8 with the 1.4 sixty.as a 11.8 quarter USUALLY translates into a 1.9-2.0 sixty and vice versa.

1.4 would translate into a high 10 second run. There has got to be to be mechanical issues limiting the cars hp to only run an 11.8 with that 60 foot time.
1.4 sixty foot times are smokin' fast.

The cars are definitely able to achieve 1.7-1.8 60 ft times with the stock runflats. I launch at 2500-3000 rpm and quickly squeeze the throttle down.
If the car starts to spin...forget the short time. It's over.

I ran a 10.84 with a 1.57 60ft...for comparison.

I'm running a 3.55 gear, and with a 27.5" tall MT DR tire, I was running right at 5500 that day through the traps (95+ degrees and humid). So I expect with cooler weather to be running right around 5800-6k with 600rwhp.

I have mentiond th is before. I hit the fuel shut off in third. on that run. Go figure....
That was the issue that day on that run. Also it was a cool June morning. No way can I launch at high
RPM, I just spin up the wheels. I am putting a line lock on this winter, I think the MT need to be really hot. Surely most of the issues are probably my driving. I do like the OS Giken diff with the 3.55. Really a tough diff. so far.....
