2005 SRT-10 - thinking about having the cats removed and retaining the stock mufflers...any thoughts? I don't care about the smell since I did the same on my old '94 albeit I had Borla mufflers. And I don't have to worry about emissions testing.

if you remove the crossover piping you will take out nearly 20lbs of weight! removing cats will loose another 10-12 lbs at this point it only makes sense to change exhaust systems also. I have the Corsa system, which i have been told is too loud without cats. In your case i'd probably use the Mopar/Borla system(if you remove cats)

Read the "Aftermarket Exhaust" thread.

Racer Robbie put up some info about removing the cats and the crossover.

You lose power with the removal. If thats not a concern have at it.
Read Robbies stuff, cause I'm like you getting info before I do my swap.

You must be on drugs. you GAIN power with cat removal.

If you gain power why don't you go ahead and put 4 more cats? I heard it gives you an extra 100 hp... :bonker:

Go catless if you can stand the noise. It is LOUD, I am catless and 3" straight through 30" MAGNAFLOW muffler. I had to install Vortex cones to reduce the noise, and Dynamat in the bulkhead.

But the weight reduction and horsepower gain more than make up for it!

Talk to Racer Robbie he's the exhaust guru. He's dyno'ed these cars both ways with or without, so I trust his opinion.

And for clarification, Thats going to high flow cats and keeping the crossover you'll get power.
I also say that I'm new to Vipers so if I'm wrong I really don't care.
Does weight reduction mean you get more power or it feels like there is more power?

Okay, I will bite. I have done the exhaust in steps qand have personal experience. Removing the cats alone and keeping everything else stock netted 5-7 RWHP. Swapping the mufflers for dynamax improved the sound without any change in power. I then went to the Mopar race exhaust. By that time I had the Paxton so cannot give hp numbers.

So, my experience is that a cat delete alone gains a minor hp increase. But it sounded like [*****]. With the muffler upgrade it sounded the best I have had to date.

Thanks for the response. I thought as much about the cat removal.

Sometimes back pressure helps scavenge the exhaust which increases HP. A straight through pipe may hurt hp and torque at low rpm unless you are at WOT. Just my thoughts.

And just to add, no cats and mufflers might hurt some low end torque, but shouldnt lose overall HP.

My buddy and I both have Corsa exhaust, but he has NO cats and I have only 2 RT hi-flows. He is slightly faster from a roll-on, he slowly pulls about a half car or more on me from 60mph+ roll ons. We were even stock, so I attribute his speed and beating me to having NO cats.

lets call it "more" ;)

Ok, but thats only like 1 out of 10 times, the other 9 times you slightly pull then mis-shift and I win.hahahhahahhahaha :p

........ but there is only one "guru", :) The "Viper Wizard" Chuck Tator!!!!!!!!! Robbie

ALL you guys are newbees!!

If you search the archives here, WAAAY BACK, and even go to the 2 sites that PRE-DATE THIS ONE.......you will see that CHUCK has indeed always been the Wizard on on this site,,,, but not the GURU.

At one time, there was an actual FORUM here, (now archived?) "Ask The Guru" manned by "The Guru" and then later "The Gurus." This was the GOOD OLD DAYS when we could get an answer from someone at Dodge in 12-36 hours, and 'unofficially' post useful information. Aaaahhhhhh the Good Old Days......
