Why is there a gen II viper on the list but no gen III. The gen III is more of a supercar than the gen II. Doesn't make sense to me. Just another situation where the Viper gets no respect IMHO.

They must not have run the 2003-2006 SRT/10. Otherwise it would near or above the Z06 at least. With the top down:)

Dodge does not test at the ring, the numbers listed for the Viper are independently tested. If someone bothered to test and prep a car like Chevy does with the Vet they will find the times to be much more competative.

Same goes for Ferrari, and many of the other cars that seem to be slower than they should. Those numbers mean nothing except how much prep time and money was placed in attaining them.

Go to your local road course and look up lap times for real comparisons.

A lot of those times were run by German magazines testing cars, including the Viper. Not the best drivers, not pushing that hard and driving press beaters. As opposed to the effort chevy put in with Jan Magnussen and the entire C6R LeMans team that included a week of tire testing to get ready, Jan running at 12/10ths flat out and probably in a prototype Blue Devil car on race gas and who knows what else.

This is the "Gen on Gen" hate that should be avoided. Vipers of ALL gens are supercars. Is a Diablo less of a supercar than a Murci? You can argue specs, but to word it that way is not adding to the discussion.

That said, a Gen3 is the better overall car, but it is odd that even with better numbers out the door, the older Gens seem to hold it's own. This will definately NOT be the case with the 08's.

The Viper is not built to run at the Ring. You would have to have extensive set-up done before it will run good times. But it can be done.

I was not putting the Gen II down. The Gen II is a great car and many think it will be more of a classic than the Gen III. But as for performance...the Gen III puts up better numbers. It should, it is a later model. My point was simply that if they are trying to compare the world's modern day supercars, than why wouldn't they used Dodge's latest viper that performs better. After all...they did with the corvette. You see both the C6 and ZO6 and the list don't you?

Not sure about the comment about the Viper not built to run at the Ring by my good buddy down in Louisiana, as the 24 hours at the Ring has been won by a Viper. Vipers have run very well there, but there is no doubt a Gen III with the better brakes would fare much better , and with someone like Karl Wendlinger who has driven Vipers for Oreca and knows the track well, the times would be quite fast. Anticipate the new 2008 to smoke many, but the last track test in Europe ( believe it was in Road and Track ), had the Viper coming out on top of the Ford GT and the Vette. As noted, the driver often makes a world of difference, also.

The Ring has inconsistant times overall because some runs are done in the rain, and poor conditions and some with inexperienced drivers, and others done with specially prepared cars.
The one SRT-10 Viper test was done with a German driver who was experienced with the track, but totally new to the SRT-10 Viper, and subsequently he got relatively crappy numbers.

The Ring is only a good judge of performance for cars that are regularly campaigned there. Porsches are run on the track most every day, so the sheer numbers balance out the day, experience, weather, prep, variables.

GM realized the European (and world) value of being seen with good Ring track times and so they campaigned the C6, Z06, and Cadillac CTS-V there with engineering crews and professional race drivers, and got relatively good track numbers,

I do think that Dodge should campaign the new Viper there, but I think that they have held off so far because of the obvious comparison to the high performance Mercedes cars. If the $90K Viper beats the $450K SLR on a famous German racetrack it could be embarrasing for them.

One thing is for sure, being a viper owner,a few times and still.A viper is NO
WAY A FORD GT.

Correct. The current Ford GT isn't race proven in anything other than resembling a 30-40 yr old car that was. At least the current Viper kicked @$$ in drifting. :D

We will be in OCT 2007 at the RING - drivers training organized by DC.
Hope to see there some Competition Coupes running this year or 2008!
One of our club members bought a CC a few weeks ago.

The RING is very special. As mentioned, the driver makes a BIG difference next to the car. Some drivers have done there 1000 or even 5000 rounds.
