Why doesn't everyone have a SC I don't think it's the money?

Re: Why doesn\'t everyone have a SC I don\'t think it\'s the money?

Just this past weekend I took a ride in a '97 GTS with the 8 lbs ROE SC. Incredible difference from my nearly stock motor. Step on it at 2500 RPM and the acceleration is truly neck snapping and boy is that fun. But I have a 2001 with the weaker pistons and am concerned about SC'ing my GTS and cooking the engine. If the stars align, I may buy a salvaged ****** GTS in the future and SC it instead.

I didn't SC (or TC) my Viper because:
- I prefer the smooth curve of NA engines.
- I enjoy the twisties more than straight line.
- It's hard enough to stretch the legs of a stock Viper.
- I like my car quieter not louder.
- I prefer reliability because I do long trips.
- I don't like spending the 10-30K on mods to make that kind of hp streetable. e.g. stiffer suspension, lowering, etc.
- I have 2 motorcycles and a grocery getter to maintain too.
- I'd rather spend that cash on an additional Viper.

It's the money. Like Chuck says, Nos is a poor man's superchager, but I like my Nos, and it is there when I need it.

I figure if you can afford a Viper you can afford a Supercharger. Is it worries of breaking the motor? or warranty? or what? I would think everyone would like more HP.........? :usa:
Because they are saving for twin turbos! Why did the chicken cross the road?

Carrot!!

You stole my response! :D :headbang:

Re: Why doesn\'t everyone have a SC I don\'t think it\'s the money?

Because I make more power than most S/C's on all motor.

obviously, money was no issue building that Motor! :p

Money is almost always an issue! I mean, it's hard not to think about putting that $15-20k down on a Gen I and only having to cough up a bit more to pay it off! Or maybe buying a Harley, 1/2 of a Prowler, etc.

But once you do get that BOOST hooked up on the V-10!! Well, you will just know you spent the money wisely! :2tu:

But then the question begging to be asked is "Are you homophobic?". That pretty much explains why you do your mods. LOL.

My wife had a good laugh reading your post.

But seriously, everyone has their reasons and you should learn to respect them.

Re: Why doesn\'t everyone have a SC I don\'t think it\'s the money?

One of the many reasons that the Viper appealed to me was that it was quicker N/A than my last Corvette was with N2O. But I agree that when you start down the modification road it's hard to stop (except for justifying the expense).
And that's where I am now. I pulled the N2O off of the Corvette before I sold it, and modified it for use on the Viper. The advantages over a supercharger are 1)that it was almost a free mod to make, 2) that it provides nearly the same power as most mild-boost superchargers that work with my creampuff Viper, and 3) that nitrous is invisible to the car when turned off, meaning stock engine wear/stress, gas mileage, emissions, etc when turned off. And power available at the flip of a switch.

If I had the extra $8,000 burning a hole in my pocket, I would get a supercharger. But the Viper easily makes more than enough power N/A for city driving, and even spirited mountain road driving. And when I want more power ( to give me the occasional edge on the freeway or at the dragstrip) I have it today, without spending any more money.

But if I do get some bonus cash to spend on my toys, a supercharger is on my short list of future mods, along with the associated mods of a rollbar, 5-point belts, HD halfshafts, and upgraded brakes.

Everyone is missing one HUGE point....and the reason I have always gotten the bigger turbo or supercharger....

GO BACK TO STOCK WHEN SELLING!!!! It is not hard to take that 7k spent and get 5500 used. So for 1.5k.....I just had how long with a SUPERCHARGER!?!?!?!

=)

Re: Why doesn\'t everyone have a SC I don\'t think it\'s the money?

Because I don't want to break my back tuning it every weekend or working around it during minor maintenance.

Because for 8K I can track Sebring 8 times.

Because guys with 600hp can't even keep up with me now.

more than financial reasons i would assume preference is the main reason "everyone" dose not have a SC. preference and indecision.

Re: Why doesn\'t everyone have a SC I don\'t think it\'s the money?

i noticed a few posts discussing ins coverage. insurance will cover a moded car. my insurance, progressive, will cover up to 150K total value of my modded viper

at time of loss; base worth plus mod worth (proven via receipts) my premium would go up 1100 bucks evey six months for 150K coverage

My wife tells me I keep buying Viper stuff every week and because of that "frivolous" spending, there is none left for a SC for the RT. NO MO MONEY......

I'm a poser not a racer. I never use the 500+ I have now with hearders and exhaust. My average speed is 35 mph in the Viper.

get rid of progressive, they will never pay the claim.
