Will the rear wing rip off at this speed?

Spoke to the owner of my car and was told by him that the car will go 195 MPH but that the rear wing (Mopar) is only rated at 165 MPH. Is this true? WHat happens when you go faster?

This is the wing I am talking about:

Unless you've done some upgrades the car will not go 195. And I wouldn't worry about wings flying off at that speed either.

Car has mods -- 600HP + NOS. Was told it would break 200MPH but the wing and front splitter slow it down. Has 3:54 gears as well.

Just a word of caution, not to believe everything you are told, but the car looks wicked and as mentioned before by the previous post don't worry about the wings.

The beast should stick well in the twisties, and just enjoy. If you want to go fast then sign for a Viper Days event when in your neighborhood.

Many would say that is FOUR too many holes to be drilled into ANY viper ;) I love the look though. But yeah, there are 4 holes I believe.

Try six, I just installed mine. With only four it could fly off! Very painful to drill but it looks great, in fact since owning the car for over five years, it seems to get more attention now than before...needless to say it's never coming off.

I don't have the car here and also thought it was four.

So, you guys are saying not to worry about the speed then? I ask because I have a trip going out to Las Vegas in 2 weeks -- lots of open desert highway. I've never been past 155 MPH before (did that in my Vette.) I was planning on opening her up for a couple of miles.

Wings on Vipers detract from the beauty of the car. That's what I think.

A wing that detracts from or limits the performance of the car is simply foolish.

Drilling holes in your Viper to install a wing limits the customer base should you want to sell the car.
Buyers are not going to pass because the car has no wing.
Buyers will pass because the car has a wing, and holes.

A race car with a functional wing is a wonderful thing.
A street Viper with a wing is rice.

Easy Joe, better have some herbal tee and ease off the expresso coffee..The wing is functional. And if for some reason one wanted to remove you could easily fill, sand and paint and no one would ever know it was even there. Plenty of guys do the same to there facia when removing front plate drill holes..

OK Adam, I'm better now.
What doe's the wing give you over no wing?
Do the big time racers use the wing that you have when racing?

I know any little holes can be fixed but fixing little holes doesn't sound like something that would be taken lightly by the Zaino heads on this board.

Remember the guy last week who was sweating the girls denim shorts scratching the car in the model pix?

Good morning Joe,

Heys its a beautiful sunday morn here on Ll. As far as the aerodynamics of this specific wing I would be lieing to you if I were to state the actual engineering benefits, but I would think they would offer so improvement over a none at all..Anybody?

Well now see, there you go. "awesome look of the wing".

I'm just not seeing the awesome, I can't be wrong about this can I?

I mean if I don't like it there can't be anyone who does, right?

Seriously, like the look's or not, if the wing were to limit performance it wouldn't be a good thing to have, right?

You are kidding right? There is no way that wing can drop a second from your 1/4 mile time.
100hp might drop 1 sec off your time.

You didn't mean that your 1/4 mile time wen't up 1sec did you?

Why thank you Adam! By the way that was a fun day at MMP(local track), My best was a 12.3 while my buddies ZR1 took a 13.1. He could have done better, but had bad (read very old) tires.

Hey Adam,
when is the hood going to be ready? If it is done now, post the pic!

This week.............Having it flatbedded back because don't want any chance of paint chips from construction going on in the NY area where I would have to pass to get home. Besides will have new facia and some other areas 3M by local installer to protect. Will take and post pics for next weekend post..YEAH BABY!

Open her up! I've had mine to 195 (next time 200+) and the wing is still rock solid. I would think your wing would be even less of a concern as it is flush with the rear deck. A word of caution, before going that fast make sure you scout the selected stretch of road checking for dips, rises, bumps, holes, etc.. You don't want to hit anything that will upset the car or launch the front end. This will also allow you to check for cops/radar. Allow at least 2.5 miles for the speed run and coast down. Other than that you should be in good shape with the downforce generated from that huge front splitter and the rear wing. Since you are going to scout the selected stretch of road you obviously will be near an exit since you will have to back track after your scouting run. Your run should be made to end before the exit just in case something breaks ( ie. motor ) you can exit off and not be stranded. And obviously make sure you wait for an opportunity to run with absolutely no other traffic. Be very, very careful as any incident would probably be fatal at high triple digits. Just my 02...I turned 50 today so I'm feeling mortal. :(

For what it's worth...

If your car's got 10 miles on it and your saving it as a collector's item in a climate-controlled environoment, I can certainly see worrying about a few holes drilled in the body. I definitely wouldn't allow those holes to be drilled, that's for sure!

Now, if you drive your car and want it to be individualized as most Viper owners do, subtle changes such as removal/repainting of side emblems, interior mods, bolt-on engine upgrades, exhaust changes (which I thought were mandatory to get past the UPS truck sound), etc., are all part of the enjoyment of Viper ownership.

When I first got my Viper, I was so worried about anything that would change it from its 'original' status. I kept all of the original take-off parts for some unknown reason and I made sure that any changes I made could be 'undone' without any indication that it ever happened. But then I started thinking about it...when I bought the car second hand it was 'perfectly stock', or so I was told and it did appear that way. But should I really believe that the previous owner never did so much as change to smooth tubes? I'm not that gullible. I'm sure the previous owner had loads of changes, had loads of fun, then put all the original parts back on for a (hopefully) better resale value. Now I have no true idea of the actual history of the car WRT to prior mods/usage and I expect that's probably the case with many Vipers being sold as 'all original' these days.

I've got the Mopar wing on the back of my '96. It was certainly the most obvious modification I had made to my car at that time. I love the appearance and wish I had installed it sooner. There was a post around here stating that it provided 100lbs. of downforce at 100MPH. I'm can't validate that aspect of the wing but I sure do like the appearance.

Enjoy your car. That's what it's for and (possibly) that's why you bought it in the first place. Get a scratch on the bottom of the fascia? So what, no big deal, paint it. Want a cool wing on the back? Don't worry about a few holes that don't show, put that sucker on there. Then drive that car around like it was meant to be driven! I guarantee nearly everyone that sees it as you ride by will also enjoy the moment...

Fair enough, BTW thanks and I'll post next weekend when my car comes back. That will be the end of the body mods, but the engine mods begin this winter. My car will have a new home for 3 months at DLM for a stage II supercharger package complete with fuel cell and a host of goodies...Have a great day!

Adam
