Getting a GTS to Gen IV Power

Whats the best economical way to get a GTS to about 600 streetable horsepower (no NOS or blowers)? thanks

Without nos or a blower you will need to build a NA stroker motor which will equal about the same amount of $ (depending on the year).

Wait a few months and the new Mopar Performance Gen IV head/intake kit for the Gen II will be available. Dyno results show 598 hp (flywheel) and if it should be priced somewhat close to the conversion kit that is currently available for the Gen III cars at around $6600 for Venom members through VPA. I have been talking to Mopar directly about this kit and am very excited to see it come to market.

I have been talking to the Arrow Racing about this exact upgrade starting last year and talked to the VPA the other day. The kit should be out soon. One suggestion has been to include an upgraded CAM to get the best performance upgrade.

One downside is that it will require the newer intake. So if you really like the looks of the engine compartment with the dual intake filters, throttle boddies and the intake manifold you will not have that anymore. I believe the only way to maintain that will be to chase a set of modified heads such as those by Greg Good. I believe Greg's heads will likely make as much power as this kit maybe more.

Fact of the matter is that if I choose to chase this mod I will be selling my currently ported heads with T&D 1.7 rr, intake, K&Ns with smooth tubes, and belangers (jet coated). I am currently making 485 rwhp with this set up. I do not know who did the previous head work. The only thing that would probably stop me from selling would be getting a new tune that moved the HP up, but that remains to be seen. My goal is to be getting around 600 rwhp. The other possibilty might be a set of heads by Greg..... but I haven't had time to pursue that option yet. We will see.

My limited understanding is that 600 rwhp might be achievable with a good set of heads etc... but at those power levels NA and all the other mods it will likely depend on how strong the bottom end is.

If you do the work yourself, its probably a smidge cheaper to do a good heads/cam package on the Gen 2 platform. There are a couple of guys that make over 600 RW with that approach but Speed racer is right, most are 550-580. I'd say it'd be very hard to tell seat-of-the-pants the difference between 575 and 600.....you'll see it in the 1/4 mi times but for just driving I doubt one could discriminate.

The Gen 4 conversion kit sounds awesome....also if it works the way its claimed to work, the driveability will likely be advantaged over a Gen 2 heads/cam set up with an aftermarket PCM.

Keep it simple.... ROE SC, borla, ACR intake and bigger injectors. Keep it at 5 PSI and you'll be right at 600.

Roe'd, headers to full exhaust, catless, 5lb, bigger injectors, jmb high flow intake system, HS roller rockers and I'm still not 600. Before roller rockers 540whp. After maybe 560whp. Add w/m for a few more ponies.

Please do more research prior. Pulling 600whp from a 5lb setup is not easy.

To get to 600whp NA you will need to be really lucky or have a "friendly" dyno. GG did my heads and planed them to give me 10.5:1 compression (Great Heads btw - they flowed 326 cfm on his bench). I used the Comp Cams camshaft that Greg typically recommends, 1.7 RR, ported intake, smooth tubes, K&N, Belangers headers, HF cats, cat back, SCT tune from DC performance for 93 octane. Bottom line is 540whp 575 ft. lbs. on my dyno. I may be able to pick up a few more HP by eliminating the HF cats, but hitting 600 is tough. I have heard of one or two people who have hit 600whp with those mods. I know a lot more who are around the 550 mark with those mods.

Just a note on the gen IV package that was mentioned. If it dynos 598 hp at the flywheel, that translates to 500-525 whp if you assume 12-15% drivetrain loss. Just make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

If it was me, I'd wait for the Mopar package and put the cam I have (Striker Cam), take it to DC Performance or one of the three or four reputable shops here and call it macaroni.

P.S. I have the Striker package and it's awesome, but a complete factory kit at 1/2 the cost is way too exciting!

Guys, some of you are confused................he said Gen IV power, that's 600 crankshaft HP. He also stated no BLOWERS OR NOS, stick to the topic.

Tagoo, your experience proves how a superior head design can make such a big difference. My car is 100% stock other than the Striker head and cam package. My headers were purchased used and are far too small for my application, 1 1/2" primary tube size, no porting or matching of the intake, stock throttle bodies and intake. All emisssions in tact. One of these days I'll port match my completely mis-matched intake and put a proper set of American Racing Headers on the car. My guess is, it should easily put the car over the 600 RWHP mark. American Racing are you listening, you want to send me a set of your headers, just so I can prove my point?

No kidding. There are plenty of folks who have first hand experience with ARH with their Gen IV and some of them have a Gen II too. I think a lot of people would be interested.

I understand that Exotic Engines has them available again. I have no experience with them, but saw a thread stating that they were available, for some reason they would not advertise the price in the thread. Leads me to believe that they are probably as their namesake implies, more $$$ than before. Hopefully I'm wrong.

My excitement over the Mopar package is that the Gen IV cylinder head shares many of the attributes that made the Strikers so good. That plus, injectors, fuel rails, gaskets, bolts, throttle bodies, pushrods, intake manifold etc. etc............ Your talking about 20K plus worth of parts for $6500!!!!!

Thats the first i have heard about the gen IV to gen II package. Now you have my attention. I was just reading about the upgrade for the gen III and was thinking they need to do the same for the gen II. And here you go.
I'll start putting money in my piggy bank now :D

It can definitely be done, but its not cheap. This pull was done at chilly ambient of 104 F:omg:, we quit pulling at 6000 rpm and did 626RW. Non-stroker.

That said, I'd still go for the Gen IV package next time :)

Thanks guys. When I was referring to 600hp like the Gen IV I was meaning crankshaft HP not RWHP. Whats a Gen IV stock RWHP?

wow...if I can gain that much power for that price, I'm going to start selling myself on the street-corner to save up. Thats the only thing that bugs me about my car vs newer vipers. keep us posted

I saw the writing on the wall for that as soon as I had my hands on the Gen-4 parts. They have virtually all of the advantages, similar flow, more availability, more reasonable price, and a far superior intake manifold and flange design.

Well I hope Mopar does end up making this kit and makes it available for a reasonable price. I believe $6500 was mentioned about for the Gen III, so a similar price for the Gen II would be great. I would differently be in the market for one of these. Is there any info on this anywhere?

This package is in its final stages of development right now and is supposed to be available this year. I was talking to some people at Mopar recently and it sounds like they are going to start making parts for the older Vipers again. Why I don't know, maybe they see a market they should be in.
