Tim Harper who has wrenched all my Vipers since 94, as well as my GTs and other cars recently took part in an SRT event in Vegas. Tim builds drag cars and has often been in Hot Rod Mag.

He was blown away by the new Viper. I told him of the Motor Trend controversy and he seemed very skeptical.

I guess he could be skeptical but the numbers speak for themselves. This being the first year of a new car and with all first year cars will take time to dial this thing in. Unfortunately with new cars rolling off the line Im thinking that what we see is what we will get.

Isn't the latest ZR1 a thoroughly massaged and developed car, where the Gen 5 is basically so fresh straight out of the oven that the chances are nowhere near even? Could this be where Tim Harper's scepticism is aimed at?

When the C6 Z06 was fresh out the oven it had no problem beating the SRT10 which was out years before it so I dont see that as an excuse for the Viper. Ralph himself even said they had a comparable ZR1 on hand for 2 years of the Gen V development so to me that excuse doesnt fly. The car just wasnt up to the task with the tires etc they gave it and with the driver that tested it.

I personally feel that your tech is correct, the straight line speeds show just how fast the new car is (1/4 mile and 0-60 mph prove this) .....it fact, I think the Gen 5 will be faster than the ZR1 in a straight line if both were on the same tires. The handling issue will get sorted out and I see the Gen 5 actually coming out on top. I hope they also get a more track worthy tire for the track pack option.

Although a lot of people are upset about the MT outcome, the reality is in the USA there is no such thing as bad press. Don't believe me?.....just look how things have worked out for Bill Clinton, Paris Hilton, Kim K, etc. I decided to shop for a Viper when I saw a comparison TV show years ago on the Travel Channel comparing a Ford GT vs a Gen 3 Viper. I just fell in love with the look of the Viper, even though the FGT won the actual comparison overall.

Can't wait to see what comes out in the next few months from other comparos and some track times from new owners.....should be an exciting summer.

Cheers,
George

Well we are not talking about the regular Z06 here so let's keep this on subject as far as the test goes. The C6 ZR1 has been around for a few years already while the Gen 5, as already said, did not have the same lengthy developmental "massage treatment" yet.

Honestly, who gives a crap about magazine articles? Some of the members here need to just go buy their ZR1, if all they care about is magazine racing. Truth be told, maybe 1% of the actual owners of either of these cars would even dare set foot on a track, and drive them to their limit. If that is the case, then why the heartburn over silly press?

Many of us have owned these newest C6's, they are great cars for the price. The Viper is just more desirable and more fun to drive, that is why I sold my 700 hp C6 Z06 and kept my Viper. And the reason I ordered a Gen 5. I might also buy a C7 Corvette too. It is good to have options, even better to own both.
