Grandpa, I admit I'm young compared to you. My problem is with older people showing a lack of common respect towards younger folks. Have I done a lot of research before posting the picture? No, I haven't. Maybe I oughta have. I just don't think anyone would feel good if the next guy tells him to stop posting.

It's funny we were having a conversation about how numb we've all become to giant HP numbers on our drive home from the LA Auto Show today. You've got 650 HP Mustangs rolling off the factory line, with 550 HP Cadillacs etc. and we weren't really excited about any car at the show. Talk about being spoiled, I remember when I saw the first IROC Camaro in '85 on the cover of Car and Driver or something and couldn't sleep untill I got one. 215HP out of a TPI 305 that was only available with an automatic, man the automotive world was on it's knees. Now were talking about a Viper being inadequate if it doesn't have "at least 700HP". I really think it's kind of game over for the Viper stature. Nothing short of a thousand HP would stand the world on it knees these days, like the way the 1996 GTS did. I'm pretty sure the SRT boys realize it's going to take a really insane new Viper to stand up in todays market.

This is a great post and I agree. It is true that the horsepower war is on and the competiton for the Viper is getting exciting. The ZR1, Mustang GT500, and import exotics are exciting vehicles that I would not be ashamed to own and drive for the right price. The Gen V can still distinguish itself if it sticks to it's roots with a huge V10 and styling that is pure Viper combined with the best possible platform for a roadcourse. If the next Vipers are too watered down for the masses, then I am personally hedged because I will always have my Gen II.

I have been long in agreement with Chuck that nannies are the worst thing to ever happen to cars. They give drivers a false sense of security with altered feedback from the road. Drivers need to learn the laws of physics before they drive instead of depending on the cars themselves to adjust for reality on the fly. Unfortunatly, most people are not driving enthusiests and prefer to have things done for them so that is how the government has succeeded in slowly adding nannies over the years. There are cars that parrallel park themselves for crying out loud. I can't wait for the accident reports to start coming in on the failure of that system. Computers can and do fail and the government is comprimising the safety of cars by making them dependent on computer aids even for the most basic things like steering and braking,

while I agree that stability/traction computers are replacing driver skill and competence, let's not be too quick to overthrow "the government" in retaliation. how many people do you know who would choose to buy a car which has advanced stability computers as opposed to that exact same car that doesn't? if you own 3/4 gen Viper, would you opt to buy one instead that is exactly the same, but has ABS disabled? most people WANT to be nannied as opposed to spending time and effort learning skills that they would only use few times in their life

Most people want a Honda Civic. Does that mean auto manufacturers should build only Honda Civics or the government mandate all cars be Honda Civics? There are a lot of folks hanging onto their GenI/IIs because for them, even a 600hp ACR can't overcome the invasive nannies and personify the real meaning of Viper.

It's about freedom. The freedom for manufactures to build something for a target market and freedom for consumers to purchase something they want rather than something the government lets them buy (and taxed of course). Millions of men died for that freedom, short lived as it was.

As far as trannys, well my 3 cars in my small collection are all stick, but my wife does not drive stick hence if I want to sneak another one in there, it will need to be paddle shift for her pleasure. That or I sell some of mine to fund it. Not prepared to do that as I am enjoying what I have.

So, let me see if I have this right...You want the rest of us to put up with a "flappy paddle gearbox" or automatic in the next Viper to appease your wife because you don't want to sell one of your other cars.? That is hilarious (not in a funny ha,ha way) and shows the mindset of some people these days.

Everyone's situation is different. Look if you don't want to have a sequential manual tranny then don't order it. I mean come on and evolve a bit. There are a lot of people that do want that option to finally get into a Viper because they can't or won't drive a stick. My wife and I each work our 50 to 60 hour weeks in our professions for many years to have what we have as zero was given to us prior. We have 5 vehicles (including the daily drivers) we have collected over the years in our small collection including a 1969 Mach 1 my Dad and I restored together when I was 13. I simply do not have anymore room to store anything else.

Look, if she doesn't feel like driving a manual, then more power to her, but working as hard as she does she is entitles to her fun even if it does not mean your definition of it. Who are you to dictate how a car should be driven. Honestly pull your knucks off the floor and stand up straight. It is quite apparent that with the very small yearly numbers of the GEN IV, it ain't going to cut it anymore. The Gen V can have a sequential automatic and still be a viseral beast. Most people are just asking for an "option". Just like you have an option to bear arms, doesn't mean you must bear arms. Some men out there are still men and will deal with the situaiton with theri bare fists or a baseball bat instead of hiding behind a gun.

Lately you Texas guys are really living in a different world. You do realize it is 2011 not 1960 right? While I agree that we have had a lot of freedoms taken away and getting worse, it is hardly like many third world countries out there. Not even close!

If it's just an option I have no problems with that. I actually hope that it's offered with all the nanny options the posers need to hide behind in order to think they can drive fast. That way, Dodge can afford to continue making a Viper for the menfolk who actually can drive.

Not even close is right. It's worse. In third world countries I can build a garage without getting a half dozen permits and waiting on inspectors. I can cut down a tree on my own property without getting sued. I can raise pigs without having to ensure they have a stress free life. I can open a restaurant that allows smoking. I can own a car without having to get it inspected.

But at least we have air condition.

Other than the Smoking (just last year!) and permits we can do all this in Michigan. Sound good? Too bad its cold as hell 6 months out of the year! Everything comes with a consequence!

Ha! Ha! I will admit that things have gotten unnecessarily complicated in America but it is not like other 3rd world countries where dictators take away food and medicine to their masses or authorize mass public killings in villages. We are inconvinenced here in America on many things but it is nowhere near that bad. You need to look at things as glass half full, not the other way around because if you look hard enough, everyone can truly find fault in everything.

Colorado, you can do most all those things freely you mentioned as well. Come out to the real West where it is truly the land of the free, mostly :) Ha! Ha! I think once you decide to look at things more openly, you might actually see that they are not that bad. It is like a strict father that looks at their children only in a certain way, when in the end to look at it for what it is, they must change their viewpoint on the world, not the world change to suit their viewpoint. Life is a lot more enjoyable when you do not look at it with pre-conceived notions. Not everything is bad these days. Somethings are stupid and ignorant but most are not that bad.

The fact that freedom is in question and that we are even debating it should put any American in panic mode. It should. But it won't. Sadly.

Back in 96 the LT4 Vette had 330 HP, and the Viper came out with an Incredible look and 450 hp. First time I saw one on the streets I freaked out!!

Now what other car in the market now has that kind of impact on the road that makes you change lanes in traffic to get a closer look? Enzo?, Murci??

For the new viper to make the stament the 96 GTS made in its day, it needs Bad A$$ looks and enough power to blow the ZR1 away.

ive driving a lot of modern sport/exotics, and I see the tc option is helpful and not as bad or evil like some here trying to tell us !

yes viper came without it and i loved it even with over 1200rwhp ! but what the problem having it with an on/off button ?

I will buy the viper because I do love the car as long as it looks and preformace like a viper ! Not because it's comes with or without tc or abs !

but that's me ! I'm sure we all love the viper and each of us prefer things to be added or loved it because it was without any nannies.

My prediction: People will complain about the styling. People will say their Gen 1,2,3,4 is better because of ______. But, through all this the Gen 5 will be a faster better car and I look forward to getting one to sit along side my ACR in the future.

That covers a hell of a lot more than cars and traction control. Obviously you have little knowledge of manufacturing industries which is understandable these days since our government and all their regulations have chased them out of the country.

In deciding whether or not to put nannies on $50=100k+ supercars like the Gen V Viper, millions of lives will not be effected. Millions of people can't afford the cars and production is only a couple thousand per year in the case of the Viper. Honestly, there are plenty of boring cars that appeal to the masses already with less than 200 hp. Why don't the people that want nannies stick to buying the boring vehicles or better yet, take the bus or subway if there is one locally. Car accidents are caused by bad judgement and a lack of driving skill and experience. Accidents are not caused by a lack of nannies. People that count on nannies to make decisions for them are future victims of Darwinism because sooner or later, the ECM will not react correctly to an unforseen variable in reality.

If an owner doesn't want the the TC on just turn it off when you drive. It's that simple. That's what I do with my Murci So, with the new Viper just turn all the nannies off. Problem solved for the people who don't like it. And for those who don't like the new Viper keep the one you have.
