I don't think it will be as boost friendly.

maybe, maybe not. i read somewhere that the pistons are forged again.

I read forged rods, but didn't see a mention of forged pistons. On the Gen 3s, the stock pistons are more the limiting factor on boost than the rods. With the other engine upgrades, you probably won't have to run as much boost to still get big numbers, so the increased compression may not be a problem.

FYI, The "VCA" had the 2008 details at VOI. We are not allowed to release details until they are revealed to the press on press day at NAIAS.

By the way, the HP IS NOT THE BIG STORY OF THIS CAR...... sorry, you'll have to wait until press day to here the rest of the story.... info that only the VCA knows :2tu:

What? More nudge and winking?

Don't you mean info that only the "priviledged few" know?

i read it here:

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=118999

i may be reading it wrong, it says - "Strength was added with forged powder-metal connecting rods and pistons with larger-diameter floating pins."

after looking at it again, you may be right.

Does anyone else think that the $90k estimate is low? 2 opposing points: with the current sticker @ $90k, this new would have to be more, given 90 more HP and other new features... However, to stay competitive with z06 and the fact many 06 coupes are selling at $10-12k under the sticker anyways, maybe a FIRM $90k is the right price. Lastly, if they do choose to only sell what they build, should we be able to purchase via VCA vendors at sticker, or does anyone think they will try to inflate? No disrespect meant to vendors (Bill, John, Mike, etc. - all good guys) as I'd love to hear them weigh in.

opinions?

I am hearing they are going to price the 'blue devil' in the 6 figure range, maybe Dodge is trying to compete with that price and keep the new 2008 under $100K...

for awhile there you couldn't TOUCH a new Z06 at MSRP, they were ALL priced 10K over, now I am hearing stories of people picking them up at or below MSRP.

No $hit!

Two matters for Jay to address:
1. Many of us on this site are in the VCA and were at VOI9, but were not privy to this information. So what are you saying, that the "VCA" isn't really the members, just the privileged elite?
2. Presuming by VCA you mean the elected officers, then why in the hell would you know anything? What's your position that entitles you to such information?

I guess the rest of us are just suckers for handing over $100/yr.

Jay, that *****!

The Gen IV seems to have the same looks of the Gen III (besides cosmetic crap). That I don't like. It probably makes it a Gen III.5

Did anyone notice that for the first time, the Viper makes less torque than hp! I thought that was the signature Viper experience, earth moving torque.

We need to get Bob Lutz back!

As I said earlier, I would rather have my Arrow rebuild that made 580 TQ and 540 HP.

It's a great time to get a gen III coupe, add heads/cam/headers/exhaust and make more HP than the 2008 for a lot less money. You could even have money left over for new wheels and tires, a quaife and motons.

Please tell me what the 2008 would have over that car?

And presumably you could get an 2008 and do at least some of those same mods and get even more.

It seems that that is the tradeoff with variable valve timing tech...Most cars with it have less torque than HP....This isnt so bad though...It could have been like the S2000 and have 160tq while making 250hp lol....Cant wait to see what this new snake does numbers wise....Wonder if it went on a diet...Doesnt look so at a glance...Glad they got rid of the run craps...That alone should drop the weight and have better ride/handling...

This isn't a gen IV its just an update to the Gen III. I thought the elimination of the crossover is what lowered the torque.

600hp for less than 100k...you whiners better check the competition. Not only is the power fantastic, but the chassis is unbelievable.

Thank you DC, and God Bless America!!! (The SRT Division are pure Americans).

Overall I like the additonal improvements and engine. I think that engine can be beafed up very easily with few modifications.

I am, however, disappointed with the majority that the Viper didn't lose some additonal weight.

Staying to true to the Viper philosphy, thank goodness, they didn't add options like stability or traction control as some of the rumors speculated.

How come no one is looking at the clip at the bottom of the article about the Corvette SS???

Looks like it will be crushing the new viper at about the same price.

Yeah yeah, time will tell. That's what everyone said about the Z06 too. If the SS is a reality, then DC missed again, and the SS (or blue devil) information has been out there for a long time at 650hp etc..

Since when is 580 = 600 by the way?

Who cares about the might be...someday...could be SS? Ok..they are strapping a S/C on a motor that is already close to its limits. What does that have to do with a new Viper motor that can get to 900BHP...naturally aspirated? Let them build it. Who gives a flip? Do you want a 100k+ SS or whatever at its max..or a 725HP N.A. Viper at close to the same price. In terms of the HP wars...it is GAME....SET....MATCH.

One guy posts some worthless gossip from a "secret source" that the new engine can make 900 HP and now it is gospel.

I think the 650HP Corvette is a more credible rumor.

...worse than a bunch of old ladies at a bingo hall.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Vipah, with ONLY 600 HP stock, you probably should not buy the 08 (although I'm thinking you would not even if it had 800 HP).
Better you wait for the Blue Devil. In the meantime, I will be kickin Z-oh-6's at the track and waiting on you and the blueman group. Rave on bowtie. Face it, DC responded with many changes to an already great car. The Z's are now yesterday's news.

Here is the Press Release on the new car:

The Chrysler Group's flagship brash and unrestrained V-10-powered sports car is significantly more venomous for '08. The underlying look inside and out is familiar, but the big changes are underhood, where the V-10 engine has been pushed out to a super-sized 8.4-liters, for 600 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque and a 0-60 time of well under four seconds.

With help from racing specialists McLaren and Ricardo, engineers looked to raise the V-10's engine speed and improve its breathing. In doing so, the engine has improvements to the cooling system, plus new iron cylinder liners, cross-bolted main bearing caps, and powder-metal forged connecting rods. New CNC-shaped cylinder heads with larger valves and variable valve timing cap the new engine, improving response and efficiency, and a new two-piece intake manifold brings better airflow.

To match the engine improvements, the Viper gets a new clutch that's actually smaller in diameter, but its twin-disc design handles the torque with reduced pedal effort - a common complaint on the current model - while reducing rotating inertia. This is mated to a new Tremec six-speed manual with a wider range of ratios, improved synchros, and reduced shift-knob travel. In addition, the Dana rear axle gets a new speed-sensing, limited-slip differential for better traction.

Thanks to Brembo dual opposing-piston calipers front and back, the Viper can now brake from 60 mph to a stop in less than 100 feet, and go from a zero to 100 to zero in just over than twelve seconds.

Changes to the Viper's outward appearance are minor overall, but in front the '08's differences are most pronounced, with a hood that's been redesigned with a larger scoop for better induction and aggressive-looking louvers for improved cooling.

Previously, Vipers came in little more than basic-black inside, with a kit-car feel brought on by parts-bin components and non-matching surfaces. The current Viper was a big step up in civility, but for the '08 Viper makes another step ahead with more than a few interior choices. It will be available in five different interior colors with a choice of bezel finishes, along with other customization options.

Assembly will remain at the Chrysler Group's Conner Avenue assembly plant in Detroit , with first deliveries of the '08 planned for spring.
