I've not heard of a 675+hp viper from the factory.

The closest I've heard of is a 2008 Viper show car with some Mopar performance parts bolted on. I'm guessing that if you want a 675hp viper, that Woodhouse could bolt the parts on for you.

What's the latest word on the 675+ HP Viper? If its coming in a year, Ill hold off buying a new one for it.
Then you could be holding off for a LONG time. There are no announced plans to ever build a 675 HP Viper. Assuming you are referring to the show car that appeared at the NAIAS (and other shows since then), it specifically stated that it was a demonstration of what the Mopar aftermarket parts could do for a 2008 Viper. And I don't know that the parts themselves are available yet - or when they will be.

The bottom line is that this is THE time to buy the ultimate American muscle car. With more strict CAFE regulations looming, gas prices climbing past record levels, and more "green oriented" politicians in or approaching public office, the days of the big muscle cars may indeed be numbered. To recycle a previous comparison, it would be like waiting for that 1972 Cuda to see if they bump it from 425 HP to 500. Instead, the 426 Hemi was dropped and the biggest engine you could get was a 340 producing all of 240 HP. I wonder how many of those people that were "holding off" in 1971 are still kicking themselves 36 years later? I'll bet quite a few...

Waiting for 675 HP? You might just end up with a hybrid Volare instead. :D

Are there any hard prices for the Mopar upgrades yet?

I can't imagine they'll be cheap considering the use of the super lightweight internals that are part of the package.

I don't think we are going to see the horsepower crash we saw in the 70's. Simply put the demand for things has changed. More and more people are learning to adapt. They will buy their muscle car for driving on that sunny day, and then a Toyota Hybrid for work. Gas prices do affect the average consumer. Viper/Corvette/Ferrari/Porshe etc are not average consumers. As far as I know only Corvette changed their horsey power in the late 70's eary 80's due to gas prices/restricitions.
What I believe will eventually happen is laws and resticitions placed for the common car where exotic cars and muscle cars will get exceptions (probably with a tax).

Although to be honest, you should be buying the car based on the appearance of the car 1st, how it handles 2nd and how much power it has 3rd. Simply for the reason is looks are the most important as you can always improve handeling and power later!

Many including myself would consider C6 non-Z06 Corvette owners average consumers. Cannot classify those with Vipers, Ferraris, and Porshes (exception is the Boxster). Reason being: These cars are just too commonplace.

That would be absolutely incorrect. Not just Chevy. Anyone selling cars in America took the horsepower hit responding to the engineering changes that were dictated by government mandates regarding emissions and fuel economy. Check the horsepower drop of any Mopar product between the 71 and 72 model years. The additional factor of the insurance companies flat refusing to insure high horsepower cars only added to the perfect storm. Plus very heavy bumpers were required in 1973 to make mandated 5mph crash limits. And it really does look as if that perfect governmental storm is headed our way again. And when that happens it will not be about individual choice and pay a higher guzzler tax. We already have that. This storm will be about emissions and there will be no exceptions for high polluters who prefer more horsepower by paying a fee. That would not float politically.

So, did Mopar jump the gun with their earlier press release? The cars will be shipping soon, so the parts should have already been cataloged I would think.

This is straight from Y2K's thread--

“We at SRT, along with our counterparts at Mopar Performance, wanted to build something for NAIAS that would show what can be done with the new '08 Viper,” said Steve Sharples, Viper Brand Manager at SRT. “This includes many of the new Mopar Performance parts which will be available for the car when it starts shipping to showrooms later this year.”

The Mopar Performance Parts featured are:

- Tubular Exhaust Header Package
- High-flowing, Cat-Back Exhaust System
- Low-restriction, functional Cold Air Intake System
- Fully adjustable Coilover Suspension Kit
- "Sidewinder" Lightweight Wheels (with anodized finish)

And don’t forget the “Racing” in SRT, as they added these race-inspired parts as well:

- Titanium Valves and Connecting Rods
- Cast Litex Pistons and Lightened Crankshaft
- High Flow Intake Manifold with Polished Upper
- Carbon Fiber Coil Covers and Crinkle Black Valve Covers
- Adapted Dodge Viper Competition Coupe Rear Wing and Front Splitter
- Michelin Racing Slicks, 18" in front and 19" in back
- 6 point racing restraints

Well, I'm looking at the new MOPAR performance catalogue. Currently available for SRT-10's are-
Race Cam
Street cat back exhaust system(it says "add a set of MOPAR race exhaust headers")
Race engine controller
Lightweight flywheel
Swinging oil pickup
Race suspension kit

So there are SOME items available now! Just NOT for the 2008 8.4L motor.

My worry is the new owners of our favorite company might want to be more PC and chop our car from production!

And the key word in that quote is "many" - not "all". So many of the new Mopar parts should be available according to this quote - but necessarily all of them. And "when it starts shipping to showrooms", which by all accounts is at least 2-3 months away. Most importantly, they are still aftermarket parts - NOT factory installed or as a factory option. So again, there was absolutely NO mention of a factory 675 HP Viper being available - e-v-e-r. There was simply mention that many, but not necessarily all, of the parts that got the show car to that number would be available in a few months.

On a similar note, I am curious....what has Dodge done with that NAIAS 675 h.p. car....It is summer now and I am sure someone at Dodge has taken that car to the track. What kind of real world numbers did it produce?

So, I bet now you're going to also tell me there's no Santa Claus :(
