I am thinking about buying a 98' GTS and came across this recall. Does anyone know if this was a manditory recall or did they do the repair only if cracks are seen? I plan on taking the car to the track so this recall is a major concern for me. Thanks for any input.

Make sure you have a "qualified" Tech that has done a few do this because if done wrong it will look horrible and does not fix anything. The welds have to actually ********* to be strong and most places have not figured this part out. We have re done more than most have ever done the first time because of this.

Blue Marlin asked; "Does anyone know if this was a manditory recall or did they do the repair only if cracks are seen?"

Here is the answer to that question: Since this was a "Recall", it IS a safety issue. Reinforcements will be done front (steering rack) and rear(diff mount)...BUT if cracks are actually found in these areas, a more extensive repair will be done(admittedly fairly rare to find cracks on stock street cars).

A "recall" should not be confused with a "TSB"..Technical Service Bulletin which,as I understand it, is usually done in response to a complaint or defect that has not been deemed to be a safety issue.

Two of our Vipers had the 998 done and another one had the 999 done...noting that no cracks w re found.

Heed the good advice already given...get the recall done by a very experienced shop!!!

I've held off on doing the recalls on my GTS because I've seen some bad jobs out there and once it's done wrong, it's really hard to un-do. There are just a couple of dealerships out there that are experienced enough to do it right.

From what I've heard, if the car is driven on the street and not subjected to track-type driving, you 'probaly' can get away without doing the recall. If you're going to track the car, you will also most likely be adding a bunch of mods to it - and if that's the case, it makes a lot of sense to truck it over to one of the expert shops and have them do the recall work while adding all the go-fast stuff to the car. If you're concerned about the recall, keep an eye out for empty backhauls from shops like Woodhouse - if they drop a car off in your area and have an empty truck going back home, you can get a good deal on that leg of the journey.

If you let folks know where you are located, we will let you know what shop near you would be the place to go to. If you aren't near a recommended place that would do it for free under the recall, just figure it into the price that you are willing to pay for the car.

Thanks for all of the replys. I live close to Palm Beach Fl. The nearest viper tech. is at Napelton's Dodge. The owner of the car had some high-flow cats placed there & said they seemed to be pretty good. I think it would be a good idea for me to post in the south florida section of the forum. I drove the car today & was impressed. Comming from a C6 corvette it's alot different. The Viper is more of a "pure" sports car & that's what I'm looking for. The car will definately be on the road coarse (Sebring, Homestead) so I think it would be a good idea to get the recall done. BTW, is this something that Dodge will do @ no charge?
