anyway to see if halfshafts have been twisted without taking the boot off?

Well, if you do it before, draw a line down the half shaft so everytime you check them, if the line is strait, you are good. If it is curled a slight bit, you have issues.

In this case try to use a flashlight and watch the metal grain.

It depends on where they are twisted. On mine, it was the large diameter tube that was twisted. The twisting was sort of like stripes on a candycane, extending from one end of the large barrel to the other end and twisting around the barrel. On mine, I could see the twisting if I looked carefully, but it was easier to feel the distortions with my hand. The twist in the large barrel does not affect the halfshafts telescoping motion.

seems they allways go south in the open shaft area
