Driver\'s Door Speakers Stopped Working....

Tonight, while driving to a cruise night, the driver's door speakers stopped working. I have removed the big speaker, and it was plugged in. However, the 2000 Service Manual is not correct..calling for two amps in a 2000, so I am a bit suspect as to how correct the wiring diagram is pertaining to the speakers. In fact, the step by step diagnostic part is also mentioning two amps..so this is also of little use. I am wondering if the leads to the big speaker first pass through the tweeter, and that maybe there is a capacitor, etc, that may have quit on the tweeter or crossover.(If there is one) Before I pull the inside door panel off to investage further...is there anything else I should try? Thanks!

I will check that again..thanks. I turned the amp around, and there is a DIN plug that feeds it, and a large square connector that sends the signal to the speakers..both were in tight.

Yeah,
the DIN comes straight from the stereo and should encompass the signals for both left and right speakers, so there wouldn't be a loose connection from the stereo. The signals split off from the amp to the respective speakers and that's where I would look first. If everything looks good there, you'll have to open up the door panel and check the connectors there.

Re: Driver\'s Door Speakers Stopped Working....

Okay folks...a bit more info now that I have taken the door apart, removed the amp, and checked the service manual again. First, neither driver's door speaker is working, although everything else on the door is. (Door handle, mirror, etc.) The amp sends a seperate signal to the tweeter and mid-bass (larger speaker)in each door. I am figuring that the radio itself sends 4 signals to the amp, FL, FR, RL, RR, then then amp acts a crossover to split the signals for the front doors. If this is true, would it not makes sense that the radio has *rapped out on the FL side? It would seem to me that if the amp went down in some way, it would be unlikely that only one speaker (not two) would stop working.Any ideas?

Re: Driver\'s Door Speakers Stopped Working....

Both speakers in the door are connected together and use a single pair of wires from the amp. So you have an electrical problem (open) some where which you've already figured out. If you had an oscilloscope you could test the various connections to find out where the audio signal is actually missing. If you wanted you could swap the left and right front speaker signals from the amp. Cut and splice the wires to make the left go to the right speakers and the right go to the left speakers. That would tell you if the amp is bad. Maybe time for an upgrade? I had a new amp, rear speakers, and sub-woofer put in my car yesterday sounds much better. Also I was told by the installer the RT-10 has 2 amps, he did one some time ago, not sure what year of if its true.

Thanks for the reply MES. Earlier RT's did indeed have two amps, but Coupes never did. I checked in my service book, and at the amp, the door speakers have two seperate leads...one to the "speaker" one to the "bottom speaker". The door speakers may share a common ground however.

Re: Driver\'s Door Speakers Stopped Working....

After mroe scrutiny...and a night's sleep...I went at this speaker situation again today. MES is correct, there is indeed only one wire leading to both driver's door speakers.(Sorry) However, after checking the wire all the way from the back..I found that the problem was inside the door jamb rubber part that holds the wire harness. Two wires were broken clean. One for the speaker, and one for a door latch sensor. (I think) I straightened it out and everything is fine. But, remeber this next time you have something not working in the door.
