I wonder if the gen4's are back out for purchase yet. New, they were actually cheaper than a gen3 and oh boy do they feel/shift better. Not to mention being stronger.
Will the Gen IV drop into a III? I know the clutches are different, but if you use the IV clutch, is a straight swap? This might be worthwhile if the price is right and they come with the '10 5th gear.
Tony,
It's not something I'd be doing for a little while. Lots of things in front of this as far as mods go.
Should go right in.
Different yoke diameter.
Your gen3 clutch should work too, as far as I know a gen3 clutch is the same as a gen2.
Gen2 can use the stock length driveshaft...gen3 should but I have not confirmed this.
I have a gen4 (08/09) in my 1996.
I have bought three new gen4's and the last one was the last one in the country Dodge had for general sell. That was 3 or 4 ?? months ago. I will look up the part # and check availability.
Tony,
I have a gen 3 in the race car (98 GTS) and it fit with minor mods to the lines. (The car eats Gen 2 trans' on road courses).
I believe a Gen 4 is even stronger but that the mods are more extensive. Next time we talk, perhaps you could 'splain me exactly what needs to be done to drop a Gen 4 in a GTS....and whether the mods are easily reversible to accommodate a Gen 3 in case Gen 4s become less-than-available.
Bob
a swap on the u-joint on the driveshaft. Easy as pie. Gen a gen4 if you can and I'll show you how to do the swap on the u-joint. Easy as pie!

Yes, explain to us how you did that![]()
Tony showed me how... But I can copy-cat.![]()
