I wonder if the gen4's are back out for purchase yet. New, they were actually cheaper than a gen3 and oh boy do they feel/shift better. Not to mention being stronger.

Will the Gen IV drop into a III? I know the clutches are different, but if you use the IV clutch, is a straight swap? This might be worthwhile if the price is right and they come with the '10 5th gear.

Should go right in.
Different yoke diameter.
Your gen3 clutch should work too, as far as I know a gen3 clutch is the same as a gen2.
Gen2 can use the stock length driveshaft...gen3 should but I have not confirmed this.

I have a gen4 (08/09) in my 1996.

I have bought three new gen4's and the last one was the last one in the country Dodge had for general sell. That was 3 or 4 ?? months ago. I will look up the part # and check availability.

Tony,

It's not something I'd be doing for a little while. Lots of things in front of this as far as mods go.

Got ya. It's killing me that I can't make it next weekend! I really want to meet some guys on here.
I'm definitely in for the BBQ in July if I'm back from China. I should be, but you never know.

Tony,

I have a gen 3 in the race car (98 GTS) and it fit with minor mods to the lines. (The car eats Gen 2 trans' on road courses).

I believe a Gen 4 is even stronger but that the mods are more extensive. Next time we talk, perhaps you could 'splain me exactly what needs to be done to drop a Gen 4 in a GTS....and whether the mods are easily reversible to accommodate a Gen 3 in case Gen 4s become less-than-available.

I've checked with some vendors on here. You can PM me and I can tell you what I've come up with so far (because I'm looking too), but may just end up doing a rebuild on my "not too bad" Gen 2 tranny.

Bob - I run a gen4 tranny too... Since you don't care about a speed sensor, it is a direct bolt-in for the tranny and a swap on the u-joint on the driveshaft. Easy as pie. Gen a gen4 if you can and I'll show you how to do the swap on the u-joint. Easy as pie!

Tony showed me how... But I can copy-cat. :)

See, I just wanted a pat on the butt......errrrr....back.
Actually Joseph knew how, it's just easier with a press.

If I were going gen4 in a gen3 I would buy the whole shaft for a gen4 and it should work. In fact, when I did mine I bought the whole thing anyway because it wasn't much more at all. Maybe $100 more than the yoke alone and you get an aluminum driveshaft that could be shortened for a gen2 AND two new u-joints that will fit any year.
