How to remove shifter **** & shaft?

I'm going to pick up my new to me 06 coupe this Saturday...I've already ordered & received my MGW First Strike **** & would like to install it for the 300 mile trip home. Can someone tell me what tools I will need to do this? Thanks in advance.

The shaft just has threads at the bottom and it screws onto the lower shifter assembly. You have to remove the console top. I searched the site and found directions. The stock shifter has two flats on it, to stick a wrench on to loosen it. The FS **** threads on and has an allen set ***** to hold it in place. Might be a little hassle to do before a road trip.

When I installed mine I only had to take off the shifter bezel. I want to say it was pretty simple and did not take long... sorry can't remember what tools I used though.

You can do this in about 15 minutes...

Tools needed: Two(2) adjustable wrenches and an allen wrench

Step 1 - Use the allen wrench to remove the shifter ring at the base of you car. It is strongly recommended to do this to avoid scratching it during the removal of the factory ****.

Step 2 - At the base of your shift **** you will see a soft leather boot cover. You need to push this boot down towards the bottom of the car until you feel a hex nut at the base under the boot. Carefully work the boot around and below this nut to expose it so you can get a wrench on it. Now you will notice that there are also 2 flats on the base of your shift ****. These are used to break the hex jam nut away from the shift **** using the two wrenches.

Step 3 - Take the two wrenches and put one on the shift **** flats and the other on the hex nut. VERY IMPORTANT!!!! You must be turning the nut CLOCKWISE not counterclockwise since you are wanting to break it loose from the **** not the car itself. So while holding the shift **** in place with one wrench, turn the hex nut CLOCKWISE with a firm motion. Some factory jam nuts may be very very tight.

Step 4 - Once the hex jam nut is broken loose from the **** you can simply unscrew the factory ****. Once you have removed the factory ****, ***** the MGW **** in place the same way. Now using the two adjustable wrenches tighten the jam nut against the MGW **** to lock it in place. Make sure the logo is aligned how you like it.

Note: Prior to tightening the **** down, you may want to run through the gears a bit to feel the height of the ****. It is adjustable by simply turning it a few turns.

Step 5 - Now that the **** is tight, you want to pull the leather boot up and over the rectangular part of the MGW **** base so that it covers the **** just under the grip part. You can do this very easily by working one side of the boot over the base at a time. Be careful not to force it when doing this.

Step 6 - Install the shifter ring. There are little post on the underside of the ring. It can only go on one way. Make sure you note how it came off. Be VERY careful to just barely tighten the screws as they have a tendancy to strip and you may damage the thread inserts on the console.

Like B767 said, you can just use some cresent wrenches that are adjustable. And take along a set of allens to find the right size. You will be done in about 15 minutes,very easy.

Not to hijack this---but can I just remove the **** and install a Hurst ****, or do I need the rod under the **** also. Thanks, John

I dont think so, the Hurst is a complete assembly and alot of work to change out.. Whereas alot of people like myself just want the shorter handle/**** so MGW one is a easy swap out.

Like B767 said, you can just use some cresent wrenches that are adjustable. And take along a set of allens to find the right size. You will be done in about 15 minutes,very easy.

Will adjustable metric wrenches work for this also?

You guys are making something simple more complicated than it needs to be. Slide the boot covering the shifter down to expose the two "nuts" holding the shift **** on. Place a 3/4" open end wrench on the bottom one and a 5/8" open end wrench on the top one. Holding the bottom one still, turn the top one counterclockwise to loosen the **** and unscrew it. Reverse the procedure to install the new ****. No need to remove the bezel, just be carefull not to scratch it.

N2 Vipers ...you are correct Sir... I just installed the ACR short shifter **** on my 2010 Coupe...and it took me less than 10 Min...Glad I didnt remove the "ring" with the allen key or
the console bezel either.... Just worked the boot down past the nut......put a towel over the "Ring" area so it didnt get damaged and and 5 seconds later I was installing the ACR ****,
Hardest part is getting the boot back up over the nut....but it eventually gets over with a little persistence... Thanks for the Tip...Im glad I read the whole thread.:2tu::headbang:

Maybe someone can help here, I bought a shift ****, just the ****, I actually thought I was getting the whole thing, shaft and all. But, all I got was the ****, an adapter thread, and a set nut. It came from Speed Dawg Shift Knobs, speeddawg.com but I don't think this thing is correct. Before I go putting a bunch of effort into and potentially ruining my stock shift ****, has anyone installed one of these from Speed Dawg? And yes, I know, contact them about it. I will do that, but I would like any feedback from you gurus as well. Thanks!

Why in the world is this site censoring the word k no b??????????????
