Just got an email from Scott at Elite. He is keying my crankshaft rather than pinning. I know he is busy (and has been very helpful) but I though I would post this question here so he can concentrate on getting my car done :) :) :) :headbang:

What is the difference between keying and pinning the crankshaft?

Thanks all.

A pin = a roll pin (usually two times/places on a Viper)
A key = a piece of metal approx 3/4" x 3/16" x 1/2"

Is your crank out ? Maybe he said keying and is pinning it....I have said keying when I was pinning.

My guess....Keying is better but both are fine. A roll pin like the pinning kits come with has a double shear strength of 7000 pounds and usually two pins are used. Keying is the normal way.......but it's real hard to do with the balancer on and the engine in the car :)

Here are some keyway pics: http://www.krazgeo.com/CrankCancer.html
