First, take a good look at what is really going on. Is the whole shaft spinning?
Or is it just the ball on the top of the shaft that's spinning?
If it's just the ball, you can probably find a set screw or a jam nut that holds it on. Either tighten it up or better yet, take it off and see what's wrong.
If the whole shaft is spinning, that means the rubber isolator in the shifter shaft is broken. You will need to replace the shifter assembly. Might be a good time to upgrade the shifter.
