Along the same line... I got a Davis Car Chip, IMO very cool. Plug it into your OBD port and forget about it. The instant the PCM generates a code it records it along with the engine vitals.
You can download the data later to your PC, once you've downloaded it you can reset the code. It also records speed and four other selectable sensor outputs (any that the PCM sees) every 5 seconds. The extended memory version holds up to 24 hours of driving data.
