Question about power steering....

On the Viper we obvioulsy have power steering on it. Now the Toyota MR2 has an electric power steering pump. At high speeds the computer on the MR2 slows down the pump because it's said to be dangerous to have power steering at high speeds because you lose feel. Now on the Viper the faster you go the faster the power steering pump goes...so why is it dangerous on the Viper like it is on on the MR2?

When the pump spins faster on a Viper, you do not get more assist, you get more of the same assist. If Toyota designed their power steering system with lots of assist at low speeds, you'd also have a lot at high speed, which could be too much. The electric system lets them provide different levels of assist under different conditions and someone has made this fuel economy feature sound like a safety feature.

Good point, I had someone who was thinking of switching a Viper to eletric power steering pump like the MR2's. There is a computer on the MR2 that regulates the speed on the pump depending on the MPH. When we were talking, I was thinking of doing this on one of my cars that does not have power steering...but based off what you said above, it could be dangerous. Is there a potentiometer that would work based off of speed mph signal that could regulate the voltage to the pump? Does MSD make something like this? Good info!
