Shifter loose!!!!

I think my snake has a problem.
When I pull up on the shifter of my 94 RT/10 it becomes disconnected from the trans. Is this normal?
I looked at my Service Manual but it didnt have a good picture of the shifter. Does it have a threaded shaft, or is there some sort of clip that holds it in place?
I tried to take a look at the shifter myself, but it looks like a real pain to remove the plate that attaches the lower boot to the floor.
HELP!!

Scott,There is a isolator in the base of the shifter to absorb vibrations from the trans and it sounds like it has broken loose.Two shafts mounted in a hard rubber.The replacement part is quite expensive so your best bet is to go with a short throw shifter or find someone that has put one in and has the stock shifter parts left over.You may be able to go to a machine shop and have a new rod made also that goes between the shift knob and the shifter base.

Make you own bolt. The shift knob is 1/2-20 and the shifter is 12mm-1.75. Cut to the size you want. I dropped mine about 1". My shifter did the same thing yours did while I was on the drag strip. On thing you could try is to glue the shift isolator back together.
