Just put the Hurst in my 2001 GTS (notmal install...read the thread with the install issues). Nonetheless, still getting used to the dramatic difference between the stock and Hurst. Without the vibration dampner of the factory shifter, you get the "feel" of when the syncro's and gears are meshing (nice)...plus very precise engagement that addresses the (my) 2-3 and 3-4 miscues. It is a short throw..that's for sure and takes a bit more effort to shift since you don't have the mechanical advantage of the factory shifter...you are doing the same work through a shorter distance of travel. Just my 2c.

What is the advantage to a B&M, Hurst, SVS, etc. versus just replacing the shifter with a short bolt? Such as these...

How much shorter can the throw be if the shifter mounts directly to the top of the tranny?

The aftermarket shifters are manufactured better. For some Viper owners, all they want is a shorter shifter (knob) height.
In road racing, we may shift 15 times per lap, times 12 laps per session, times 4 sessions per day = 720 shifts x 3 days = 2160 shifts. The stock shifter has weak springs, a dampener, and the bushings are loose, all resulting in a rather numb, or unconnected feeling. An aftermarket shifter has stronger springs, no dampener, and better bushings, resulting in a more connected feeling.

I don't know squat about the B&M, and the guys above have done a great job of explaining the benefits. But, I do know that my Hurst is probably the most satisfying mod I have done. Even though it was not particularly easy. The car shifts with the flick of my wrist, and I always hit the intended gear.

Got tired of how short the Hurst shifter w/slippery Hurst que-ball knob was in my GTS...and since I love the leather-wrapped stock "ball", figured I'd re-install on the Hurst. Threads are the same (1/2-20 NF) so I simply cut the OEM stock shifter about 1/2' below the ball. Drilled 29/64th bit about 3/4 inch into the shaft, tapped 1/2-20 NF, and screwed on the end of the Hurst shifter. Pretty slick and now I have the grippy stock knob at the "right" height with the much improved short-throw configuration. Before I cut the OEM knob, I screwed it on the Hurst just to see what it looked like. Should have taken a picture..pretty funny seeing the stock shifter sticking up that high!!

I am upgrading my shifter, and it was recommended to me by Chuck Tator to go with the Hurst....He has never given me anything but GREAT advice....if that helps at all. :2tu:
