Are there any tricks to removing the shifter shaft? All I want to do is take a couple of inches of the stock shaft. The reasond behind this is I want to retain the stock ball, (Cognac interior). Or will one of the after market shifters accept the stock ball.

Thanks

Randy

You have to remove the console (two pieces) to get to the base of the shifter shaft with a crow foot wrench.

After market short shifters will use the stock ball. I am about to begin producing a shortened, weighted shifter shaft. It will make for firm shifts and will be 1 inch shorter than stock. You will get a lot of the benefits of a short shifter without the expense, and installation work. The extra weight helps with the shifting. The shortened height reduces the distance it has to travel, and the solid steel shaft make for firmness. Also you won't have to drill out the rivets holding the rubber boot in place.
PM me if interested.

I cut both the upper and lower shafts, just left enough thread for a reduced thickness locknut, and gained about an inch. Didn't touch the rivets, and didn't spend any money.

Hi Randy,

I have the Hurst short throw shifter which DOES NOT allow the stock ball. However, I believe that the B&M shifter WILL allow the stock ball.

Thanks for the info guys. Is the ball threaded on? I tried to twist it some, the whole shaft started to turn. There was quite alot of friction so I stopped, like something was turning in the lower shaft. I had the boot pushed down and could see the jam nut turning also. Nothing under the shift pattern cap, that ball must be real tight, thread lock?, just did not want to damage anything. Back for more information???

I do not think that the ball will come off the stock shaft, at least it didn't on my '01. I went with Rich's shaft and an MGW knob to replace it.

The ball will come off. Randy, leave it alone until you have the replacement shaft from Detert or BlwnV10 listed above.
