Speedometer problem.

I was driving today on my way home, and all of a sudden at low speed, my car shuddered a couple of times as if it was about stall. then the speedometer went crazy. now it isn't displaying the correct speed. any thoughts?

Very likely a bad. old battery, maybe with bad contacts or ground,,,,, or rarely an alternator. Did a CEL lite come on?
