Throwout bearing problems HELP!!

Well were to start, my car received a new transmission, SPEC stage 2 clutch and throwout bearing and a new flywheel about 5 months ago. Well about 500 Miles after i got the car back I was driving the car down town one night with the clutch started grab real close to the floor until I couldn't shift gears anymore. After getting some fluid in her i was able to get her home. I didnt think much about it that maybe it had just bleed air out of the system. But this happened again about 3 months (about 4 weeks ago)after the event down town. I jacked up the car today to get a look and took off the inspection plate and there was a little fluid in the bell housing but not to bad. The only thing i noticed was the hydraulic line going to the throw bearing was lose and I could wiggle it. I was so mad today after all the problem i have had with the car that i took it out and really got on her and she was shifting better then ever and didn't leak at all!? I would think that if the TOB was going out that it would have gone out the first time it leaked and not this hit and miss. It only seems to happen when it take her on longer trips any ideas? I deploy on OCT 6 and would like to get this fixed!

Yes the hard line going into the slave will wiggle slightly. The bleed line above should not however when tight. Was your replacement slave a Mopar unit - the slave and bearing preassembled - or one that is missing the TO bearing that you have to supply from elsewhere and assemble yourself? Reason I would ask is that some say even though the factory service manual states it is one part, that you can disassemble the TO bearing from the slave. And the inverse of that, buy the cheaper slave and do a DIY assembly. I always use the Mopar unit which is together out of the box.

Got you so yes i assume dodge used the same slave, We shoot how much longer do you think i got? Think i can baby it for the next couple of weeks? I mean i have been driving the car for months and it has only done this twice

yes it seems more often than not every time you dont replace that old slave when you do a new clutch, it will come back within a few months leaking, i guess because of differant pressure points from old to new and disturbes the slave pattern of operation, i dont know--- but it allways bites ya in the ass

Here is an old post, you might find it interesting:

Let me emphasize that I do not claim to be an expert on the viper clutch , but, on the other hand I don't think there are many of those around. I was having some issues with my clutch and started asking questions and found that I was not getting any answers so I decided to dissect the slave and take some dimensions.

I going to post the pictures and operating sequence tonight. I will follow up with some dimensional data later in the week.

I will start on the left side and explain my numbering system:

Line #4 - that line is the bottom of the rubber ram that forces the throwout bearing into the clutch. The area below the #4 line is filled with hydraulic fluid. In other words that is where the ram sat in my car when the clutch was not depressed.

Line #3 - that is the actual metallic follower that sits on top of the rubber ram. It is the piece that makes contact with transmission side of the throwout bearing. It also has an internal rubber seal that aids in the sealing process.

Line #2 - this is the actual travel distance the the slave delivers. The throwout bearing started at Line #3 and traveled to Line #2 when the clutch was depressed.

Line #1- this is the maximum the slave can travel without losing fluid, if you go beyond Line #1 you will loose the pedal.

This is the transmission side of the throwout bearing. Ignore the brass rod, that is my way of standing up the ram and follower. The sequence is:

#6 follower - this is what contacts the throwout bearing on the clutch side.It also rests on top of the the rubber ram on the transmission side. This is also #3 in the earlier picture. I indicate it as the metal follower, but, it is actually comprised of two thin metallic rings with a seal on the inner diameter.

#5 hydraulic ram - the bottom of this sits at line #4 in the first picture. The metal follower sits on top of the ram.
 
Top
